If you know any 5th or 6th graders, or if you’ve ever BEEN a 5th or 6th grader, you know that the concepts of fractions and decimals require a LOT of repetition.
My Lower Level students need plenty of practice with this, as many of them have to take the exam BEFORE doing a lot of practice at school.
I’m creating joyful materials for topics that are usually more, uh, groan-ful. 🙈🤣
Watermelon Math: the Workbook, is coming soon!

If you know any 4th, 5th, or 6th grade students preparing for the ISEE or SSAT, grab a set of Watermelon Math while they are on sale! ☀️
These are the terms that my Lower Level ISEE students have never learned or always forget, because, let's be honest: math vocabulary is a little dull. Watermelon Math cards have been meticulously designed and illustrated with colours and images so that kids will be more likely to remember the terms.

One of my favorite skills to practice with Lower Level ISEE students is Comparing Fractions to 1/2.
On multiple choice tests, it makes sense to use the quickest strategies first because often more time-consuming strategies are not even needed to determine the right answer.
I designed this Up Arrow Down Arrow worksheet for students to practice this method. I made the arrows BIG so there's a bigger chance that the arrows will serve as visual reminders in students' minds later.
Watermelon Math Activity Pages will be launching in late summer. I'm so excited to share them! ☀️🍉

I won’t blame you if think math properties are boring.
I mean, they aren’t all that thrilling if I’m super honest.
I’ve been using my Watermelon Math cards and one of my newly designed worksheets to work on the properties with my students. Giving them the cards gives them the independence to look back at the definitions as often as they need to. It’s a subtle, but meaningful, user experience distinction. They can hold the cards in one hand, spread them out around them, flip them over as needed, etc, while working on the questions on the page.
If you know 9 and 10 year olds, you know that they are not as likely to refer back to definitions they learned in a book. A more visual and hand-held reminder encourages them to support their own learning.

Getting kids to do school work over summer can be tough! Getting them to do test prep over summer is an even bigger ask!
But leaving test prep till fall is much more stressful, and frankly, might not be enough time to prepare.
I am dedicated to making test prep less painful, and I’m excited to announce that Watermelon Math Activity Pages are coming soon!

Is aiming for the top score counter-productive?
The highest score for the ISEE is a stanine of a 9. Naturally, most students and families would love to see 9s on their score reports. But often hoping for 9s can add undue pressure.
To achieve 9s, students have to be operating at an extremely high level of accuracy--missing sometimes zero questions or up to 2, 3, or 4 questions, depending on the section. Only 4% of all test-takers are earning 9s, so it's useful to think about whether or not this is realistic.
7s and 8s are still quite handsome scores!
I have just a couple of slots left for students to join my roster for the fall/winter test season. If your student hasn't done a diagnostic yet, I'd love to assess the starting point and create an individualised program for making the test prep journey as low-stress, successful, and empowering as possible.

How comfortable are you in the "I Don't Know Zone?"
Even as adults, this can be tricky!! When students are going into an exam thinking they are supposed to know everything, it can be quite jarring to encounter unfamiliar material. An important part of test prep is building a student's comfort in the "I Don't Know Zone."
I'm nearly at capacity for students for the fall/winter ISEE test prep season, but I am still taking appointments for my ISEE Readiness Audit service.
If you know a student who will be taking the ISEE this fall, and that student hasn't started his or her test prep journey yet, now is the time to book the Readiness Audit!
