A wise man once said, “a left foot is a terrible thing to waste”. If you know, you know🙇🏽‍♂️

If you saw my last post, I talked about forcing the arm out—which you can see in my left footed driven ball. A weak-footed driven ball is not one of my strongest or most confident passes, so I’m really forcing on the technique. You can see how I’m trying to keep my arm out during the follow-through.

If it takes a half-second more to compose yourself to play a 1️⃣successful pass but MOST IMPORTANTLY 2️⃣the perfect pass for your teammate to receive, go ahead and slow yourself down.

You’re training for a reason. Start somewhere and build from it.

Open up✅Sideways on the ball✅Arm out✅Backspin✅Below the waist✅Some of the cues to think about when playing a driven ball🎯

This day was a light session and I just wanted to work on the technique on a driven ball. I’m begging you guys––stick the arm out for as long as you can. It works wonders. All those failed reps on practicing a certain mid-long range pass might come down to it. Spend the time on how you set up for the driven ball, focus on the details, and EXECUTE💥 .

Short🎯—Medium🎯—Long😤

3 targets:
1️⃣10-15yd
2️⃣25-30yd Driven Ball
3️⃣40+yd Lofted/Flighted Ball

The best advice I can give you when it comes to playing driven or flighted balls:
🗣STICK THE ARM OUT

Keeping your arm out helps with the little things to accurately playing longer range passes:

1️⃣supporting the plant foot with added stabilization/balance
2️⃣helps the rotation of your upper body to get sideways on the ball (not to be mistaken for leaning back). If you get sideways on the ball, notice how your kicking leg can reach full extension, including the locking of the ankle (plantarfelxion)🤯 .

It’s the details that matter in this game. The tiniest of details. Be meticulous. Compete with yourself to get your training done the RIGHT way. Take a look at how the professionals are playing their passes💯 .

There’s always that one goal you thought you had on video🌈🤦🏽‍♂️😂

This popped up on my timehop and I think it’s hysterical. I think this was the 3rd game on a 90°F day at Potomac Memorial Day weekend tournament at 16y/o.

100% had to run across the keeper and make sure he got a good look at me😂some people—most people probably thought I was a d***head on the field. The centerback probably thinks that because I’m charging right at him 🤣I’m aware of my antics. Schoolboy defending though.

Who do you know that defends like this?🤦🏽‍♂️⬇️

If you have a wall, you have a teammate🤷🏽‍♂️

You need 3 things for this exercise:
✅Something to nutmeg (like a hurdle)
✅A wall to play a pass and receive it back
✅A target

Quality on the pass depends on how well you can turn with the ball (look at left footed pass)‼️.

If you saw my last post, this is the first segment in the session with the ball. At this point I’ve now practiced the crossover movement, and I’ve progressed myself to take on the same movement with the ball⚡️ .

There’s two ways to go about this exercise. You can go for:

or
2️⃣Speed & Distance
OR
3️⃣Both🙇🏽‍♂️ .

Pulling off a Drag Back in the game comes with two tasks— Taking the ball into the open space & getting away from the defender💨

Take a look at the trailing leg in the 2nd video as I pull off a same-foot Drag Back:

When pulling a Drag Back ,the ‘plant foot’ transitions into the trailing leg. So if you can take the next touch with that foot, it helps to immediately accelerate & get away from the defender💨 .

But it really comes down how bad you want to get away from the defender🤷🏽‍♂️ .

Looking at the final pass, what do you think is the difference between the two reps? • •

Before you scroll down to see the answer, let me know what you think⬇️ .

The soccer tennis net is proving to be a genius purchase. In this drill it’s about clipping the ball over the net, with the right amount of purchase to get the ball *just* over the net. Doing such is another way of getting the player to try and get underneath the ball to create backspin.

You’ll need to learn how create backspin to play these passes:

1️⃣Driven Balls
2️⃣Chips/Lofted Pass
3️⃣Flighted Long Balls

The biggest difference that I see in the two videos:

The setup touch and the time taken to play the pass.

1️⃣Receives pass and takes steps to execute the pass
vs
2️⃣Receives pass and continues forward to execute the pass

Eliminate the half-second spent preparing and remove the backstep💯 .

Ball Mastery🎶 • •

Alternate Drag-Back –– 4 Inside Touches –– Outside Touch –– Forward Touch & Repeat

I highly recommend using a futsal ball when attempting ball mastery exercises. The ball stays along the surface, and it allows you to get a different/stronger feel for the ball. Being able to push/drag the ball is a whole different type of touch that, with a futsal ball, you can become comfortable with💯 .

When practicing Ball Mastery exercises, TAKE SPACE WITH THE BALL👀 The yellow stick is treated like a defender. It’s like ‘sizing up’ your defender–– get the defender to move, and take the vacant space that YOU created. If you don’t move the defender, they can either bite, or wait for you to finish dancing on the ball in the same space you were at 5 seconds ago🤷🏽‍♂️ .

When you start taking the space either given to you or earned, you’ll begin to notice how manipulating the ball from space to space also manipulates the defender. See the space, or create the space–– then take the space💥 .
