🚁 That’s a wrap on the first Region 9 Drone Coding Camp!

What an incredible week!

Today our students put their new skills to the test by completing a series of coding and flight challenges that combined many of the concepts they learned throughout the week. It was exciting to watch their confidence and teamwork shine as they tackled each mission.

We also kicked off the day with a real-world demonstration of an autonomous roof inspection mission. Students saw the entire process—from planning the flight and creating the automated mission to watching a camera drone carry out the inspection. It was a great opportunity to see how the same technology they’ve been learning is used by professionals every day.

We wrapped up the morning with one final run through the confidence course. The improvement in both coding and piloting skills over the past five days was remarkable. Students who were just beginning to learn the basics on Monday were flying with confidence and approaching each challenge with determination by Friday.

A huge thank you to our students for their enthusiasm, perseverance, and willingness to learn, and to the families who supported them throughout the week. We hope this camp sparked an interest in coding, drones, and the many career opportunities they make possible.

Region 9 Drone Coding Camp

Today marked our final day of learning new coding concepts, and our students continued building the skills they’ve developed over the past four days.

Each lesson challenged them to think logically, solve problems, and refine their programs while gaining a better understanding of how coding and drones work together.

Tomorrow, students will combine many of the concepts they’ve learned over the past four days as they take on a series of fun coding and flight challenges. They’ll have the opportunity to apply their programming skills, work together as a team, and demonstrate just how much they’ve learned during camp.

We’ll also finish the week with a real-world demonstration of an autonomous drone inspection mission, showing how camera drones can fly a pre-planned route to inspect a structure and capture images with minimal pilot input. It’s a great opportunity for students to see how the same technology they’re learning about is used in industries such as construction, surveying, infrastructure inspection, and public safety.

Region 9 Drone Coding Camp

Today was a true lesson in what it means to be a programmer.

Students began the day by tackling one of their most challenging coding exercises yet. Instead of using the higher-level movement commands they had become comfortable with, they programmed their drones using individual flight controls—roll, pitch, throttle, and yaw. It was a big jump in complexity, and there were plenty of moments when the drones didn’t behave as expected.

But that’s where the real learning happened.

Students tested their code, analyzed what went wrong, made adjustments, collaborated with classmates, and tried again. There was some frustration along the way, but there was also a tremendous sense of accomplishment when their drones finally performed as intended. Today reinforced that perseverance, ingenuity, and teamwork are just as important as writing code.

After conquering the day’s toughest challenge, students put the skills they had learned over the past three days to work in a fun activity that had their drones interacting as if they were on playground equipment. It was rewarding to see how quickly they could apply the programming concepts they had already mastered.

We wrapped up the day with more time on the confidence course, giving everyone additional stick time to improve their piloting skills, precision, and confidence behind the controls.

Every day, these students are becoming better coders, better pilots, and better problem-solvers—and that’s exactly what this camp is all about.

Region 9 Drone Coding Camp!

Today our students took another big step in their drone coding journey by putting their programs to the test.

Using Blockly programming, they wrote code to make their drones fly perfect squares and even the letter “Y.” As expected, not every flight went exactly as planned the first time—and that’s exactly the point!

Students quickly discovered that successful programming requires patience, critical thinking, and a willingness to test, adjust, and try again. A small change to one line of code can make a huge difference in how a drone flies. Watching their code finally produce the intended flight path after a few tweaks was a rewarding experience for everyone.

The class also had the opportunity to enjoy free flight through our indoor confidence course, giving students additional stick time while improving their piloting skills, precision, and situational awareness.

Every day builds on the last as students gain confidence not only as drone pilots, but as programmers and problem solvers.

We can’t wait to see what they accomplish during the remaining three days of camp!
