Howard Cheng is a passionate and dynamic artist whose gorgeous and finely detailed
performances have made him one of the most virtuoso violists of his generation. He is a winner
of Young Arts Competition, Idyllwild Arts Academy Concerto Competition, and Eastern Music
Festival Concerto Competition. He has given solo recitals on both coasts of the United States and
has performed publicly throughout North America and Asia. He gave his first viola recital at the
age of 13, performing La Campanella, which is famous for the most difficult and virtuoso viola
repertoire. In addition to performing, Howard is passionate about sharing his love for music, and
has participated in outreach programs for nursing home, children’s hospitals, and music
programs across the country.

In high demand as an orchestral musician, Howard has held the position of principal viola with
Pacific Music Festival Orchestra, Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra, and the Juilliard Orchestra.
Additional orchestral activities include performances with Perlman String Chamber Orchestra,
Music Academy Festival Orchestra, as a substitute with the Chamber Orchestra of New York and
Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra.
Howard has attended such prestigious institutions as Idyllwild Arts Academy, Shanghai
Conservatory of Music, The Juilliard School; His former teachers have included Donald
McInnes, Chen-hung Ho, and Li Sheng. He has also studied with world’s finest viola teacher
includes Xi-di Shen, Wing Ho, Cynthia Phelps, Robert Vernon, Jeffrey Irvine, Richard O’neill,
Karen Dreyfus and Hsin-Yun Huang. He plays on a viola made in 2010 by esteemed Polish
maker Bronek Cison. Howard is a proud recipient of a J. Landess Memorial Scholarship and
Victor Herbert Prize at the Juilliard School, where he is pursuing his Master Degree under NewYork Philharmonic viola principle Cynthia Phelps.
