We are reposting the obituary for Mrs. Lassiter. She impacted so many students. Below were comments posted about her in June 2013 on our previous page:
Angie Sivori - She was one of my favorite teachers - especially during our senior year. I remember that our desks were arranged in a semi-circle in front of her.......and I still remember most of those comma rules!
MaryAnn Mittendorf - She was my English teacher and I loved her!
Lori Light Duncan -I remember I was scared of her my Junior year of HS but by my Senior year I loved her! She had a way of saying things that you just didn't forget!
Joan E Beggs Hawes - A great great teacher!
Mitzi Borum - She was the definition of a true teacher. She had her own unique style too. I agree with Lori....when she taught....we remembered her words.
Melissa Holzer Griffith - Went to the funeral today and it brought back so many memories by folks giving their favorite stories. She was one of the best! It was so good to see Jay!
Laura Sielbeck - I still remember so much from her class...she really gave me a love of literature
Herbert Hewliss Brown - This mentor, teacher, and educator (Mrs. Wilma Lassiter) help me to build character, self-esteem, self-motivation, and confidence in my abilities as a writer, and as a person. I have carried these attributes with me since my graduation from Metropolis High school in May of 1973. She- along with many other teachers, instilled in me the desires to succeed. Mrs. Wilma Lassiter will live on in my heart, and the hearts of many students, faculty, friends, and family.
Beverly Kern-Turner - She was a great lady with a passion for teaching.
Jamie Fowler - I loved her too!! I will miss her ! Should have went to see her!! Prayers & thoughts with jay& jane
Kevin Ogle - She was a force of nature. Speech contests, drama night, Thespian Society, her reading of Renaissance in my Oral Interp class. We learned whether we intended to our not. There are few in her class. God speed Wilma Lou.... And oh bye the way... THANK YOU!
Cheryl McNair - One of the greatest teachers of our time! RIP Mrs. Lassiter! Thanks for inspiring us!
Wes Rutt - Awesome teacher who believed in her vocation, she touched thousands in the most awesome way. My memory of her was that she was very even tempered and when you got in her class even the most disruptive kids would settle down and find learning a joy.

Polly Miller Johnson - So many memories of such a great teacher. In addition to the grammar and literature she taught me I left her classes with more confidence in my ability to speak in front of a group, more respect for myself and my classmates, and a sense of accomplishment of rising to the challenges she put in front of me. Mrs. Lassiter, thank you for sharing yourself with so many of us and instilling so much positive in my life. You will be missed and fondly remembered.
Nancy Hess - She was my favorite speech teacher... Never forget the play "Meet me in St Louis" (:
Brenda Knat - I can still recite my monologue....had lots of fun times with the Speech Dept. including wrap parties, bonfires on the river, the bus trips to competitions, trophies.....a lot of good memories provided by a great teacher. Does anyone know what happened to Mike Drumsta? He was another very special person from the Speech Department.
Debbie Riddle - Lots of good memories of Mrs. Lassiter and the Speech and Drama Dept. Loved Drama Night and going to all the contest.
Stephen N. Brannon - So many great memories of her in speech class and various school plays. She was also a neighbor just across 10th Street from my house.
Gary Graham - She was an amazing teacher and had LOTS of patience with me....kept working on me to use my full potential ....she was actually more than just a teacher but also a mentor
Karen Elliott Bowman - One of her greatest gifts was her ability to teach others to believe in them self. Her words of wisdom often still pop into my thoughts after all these years. She, along with Robert Midnight, and Mrs. Beardsley inspired me to become a teacher. Each of them were awesome teachers, my favorites!
Karen Elliott Bowman - And oh boy, she could be really funny.... and fun. I will never forget the day in class when we were working on character development and a discussion about the female anatomy arose. She was dead on with her quick wit and funny wise cracks. Her love for her profession was obvious.
Ronda Cole Darnell - I took her senior lit class - and we had a blast. In a classroom where you elected to take it, she could really cut loose. Jesse showed up one day and told about where he used to take her parking and then went around the room and had all of us share our parking spots! lol
JoAnn Huckelberry Skees - She was a wonderful person and so much fun to be around.
John Kreuter - Great teacher and a great person.
Rhonda Hausman - She was very special lady ;)
Allison Underwood - Loved Wilma Lou! So sorry to hear of her passing. She taught my dad also when she first began teaching.....
Janice Korte Watson - I didn't have her as a teacher, but I did know her personally. My dad's dear friend Lorraine, and also Jimmy Phelps mom was a step mom to her husband. She was a sweet person, I remembered her in school also, she was so pretty.
Karen Woods - She was a very special teacher! Later she was a very special co-worker, and always a very special friend!! We had some great times together!
Tom Willoughby - Great friend, teacher and colleague of mind. Good personality and pleasure to be around. Wilma will be missed.

Teresa FrancisI've often thought of her when I correct my own sons' grammar. A teacher with her talents should be paid like a rock star! Condolences to the family.
