2027 HALL OF FAME

Our final HOF announcement this year is for the second "era" of teams to be elected to this year's class - a four-year period for the BOYS TENNIS program.

The 2011 through 2014 teams continued a crazy run of success at MTHS. By the end of 2014, the Redbird program had captured seven Mid-Illini and seven IHSA Sectional titles in the previous eight years.

These particular four teams finished near the top of the state tournament leaderboard each year and would almost surely have brought home four consecutive state trophies had the two-class system existed just a few years earlier than its debut in 2017.

MTHS had a record of 80-12 during this era, including 41 shutouts, and won an astonishing twenty weekend tournaments over the four-year period.

The Redbirds had SIX All-State players compete during this era. Will Koehrsen, Mitchell Nguyen, Ryan Willard, Fletcher Koehrsen, Christoph Goettler, and Quinn Vaughn made it nearly impossible for opponents to find holes in the MTHS line-up.

Will Koehrsen was named Peoria Journal Star Player of the Year ALL FOUR YEARS, the only athlete in MTHS history to be so honored in any sport.

The 2027 induction ceremony will be held prior to the varsity basketball game on Saturday, January 23, 2027 at 5:30 pm in Toepke Gym, in conjunction with the Redbird Roundball Classic.

Last week, we introduced you to the 2027 MTHS Athletic Hall of Fame individuals - Gill Urycki and Will Koehrsen.

Now, it's time to meet the teams. There will be two ERAS of teams being inducted this year. The first is the 2013, 2014, and 2015 baseball teams.

Over the three-year period ending in the spring of 2015, the MTHS baseball program reached unprecedented heights. Metamora won two Mid-Illini Conference titles, three IHSA Regional plaques, three IHSA Sectional championships, and one IHSA Super-Sectional award. The Redbirds compiled a record of 90-27 during the three-year period.

The 2014 Redbirds brought home Metamora's first ever baseball state trophy, placing 3rd in Class 3A. In the run to state, MTHS defeated Washington, East Peoria, Notre Dame, Rock Island Alleman, and Sycamore, three by shutout.

At the state tournament, the Redbirds lost the semi-final game to Lemont before rebounding to defeat Grayslake Central for 3rd place.

Stars of the three Redbird teams were many, but Spencer Gaa, Alec Skender, Ethan Skender, and Trent Johnson were some of the all-time names from that era, as those four were named MVPs of the three Redbird squads.

Johnson was the 2013 Peoria Journal Star Player of the Year, while Ethan Skender earned the same honor in 2015.

The 2027 induction ceremony will be held prior to the varsity basketball game on Saturday, January 23, 2027 at 5:30 pm in Toepke Gym, in conjunction with the Redbird Roundball Classic.

MTHS is proud to announce the Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2027!

Our second individual athlete for this year is WILL KOEHRSEN, a 2014 MTHS graduate.

Will was a two-sport athlete at MTHS, participating in cross country and tennis.

In cross country, Will was a member of two state qualifying teams as well as the IHSA Sectional championship squad from 2013.

It was in tennis, however, where Will earned his spot in the Hall of Fame.

He was named Peoria Journal Star Player of the Year an incredible FOUR years in a row, the only athlete in school history in any sport with that designation. He was the Mid-Illini Conference singles champion four years in a row, winning every singles match he played in four years of competition.

Will also captured four consecutive IHSA Sectional championships, three in singles and one in doubles. He was named to the All-State team all four years in high school and finished as high as 6th in the single-class state tournament. Will's tennis teams won three Mid-Illini and three IHSA Sectional team titles during his high school career.

He ended his time at MTHS with 184 total wins, including 143 in singles. At a school with seventeen IHSA Sectional titles in the past twenty-three seasons, he is the all-time leader in both categories by a wide margin.

Will was also the 2014 MTHS valedictorian, as he possessed a ferocious intensity and love of competition both on the tennis court as well as in the classroom.

The 2027 induction ceremony will be held prior to the varsity basketball game on Saturday, January 23, 2027 at 5:30 pm in Toepke Gym, in conjunction with the Redbird Roundball Classic.
