💙 Safety, Justice, and Belonging: Reflections from a Council de Manos Delegate
As an NAD Delegate representing Council de Manos, I've been reflecting on the conversations surrounding the Zero Tolerance Policy at this year's conference.
Council de Manos' mission is rooted in empowering and representing Latine Deaf, DeafBlind, Deaf Disabled, Hard of Hearing, and Late Deafened communities through social justice, equity, accessibility, leadership, and respect for human dignity.
Because of those values, I strongly support creating environments that are safe and free from harassment, discrimination, bullying, and abuse. Every member of our community deserves that.
At the same time, I believe our community should continue meaningful conversations about whether the language we use including terms like "Zero Tolerance" best reflects our shared commitment to inclusion, cultural humility, accountability, and belonging. Words matter. They shape how people experience safety, trust, and justice.
As a Latine Deaf leader, I also believe our Latine Deaf community should come together to discuss this issue through the lens of our own values, culture, and lived experiences. We have important voices to contribute to this conversation. By listening to one another and engaging in respectful dialogue, we can help shape policies and practices that promote both safety and belonging for everyone.
My hope is that we continue moving forward together with compassion, transparency, and a shared commitment to justice, equity, and accessibility for all members of our Deaf community.
These are my personal reflections as an NAD Delegate representing Council de Manos, and I welcome respectful dialogue.
💙 Seguridad, Justicia y Pertenencia: Reflexiones de una Delegada de Council de Manos
Como delegada de Council de Manos ante la NAD, he estado reflexionando sobre las conversaciones en torno a la Política de Tolerancia Cero durante la conferencia de este año.
La misión de Council de Manos se basa en empoderar y representar a las comunidades Latinas Sordas, Sordociegas, Sordas con Discapacidades, Personas con Pérdida Auditiva y Personas Ensordecidas Tardíamente, promoviendo la justicia social, la equidad, la accesibilidad, el liderazgo y el respeto por la dignidad humana.
Con esos valores en mente, apoyo firmemente la creación de entornos seguros, libres de acoso, discriminación, intimidación y abuso. Todas las personas de nuestra comunidad merecen sentirse seguras, respetadas y valoradas.
Al mismo tiempo, creo que debemos seguir teniendo conversaciones significativas sobre si el lenguaje que utilizamos, incluyendo el término "Tolerancia Cero", realmente refleja nuestro compromiso con la inclusión, la humildad cultural, la responsabilidad y el sentido de pertenencia. Las palabras importan. Influyen en cómo las personas experimentan la seguridad, la confianza y la justicia.
Como líder Sorda Latina, también creo que nuestra comunidad Latina Sorda debe unirse para dialogar sobre este tema desde nuestros propios valores, nuestra cultura y nuestras experiencias de vida. Tenemos perspectivas importantes que aportar a esta conversación. Al escucharnos con respeto y aprender unos de otros, podemos contribuir a crear políticas y prácticas que promuevan tanto la seguridad como el sentido de pertenencia para todas las personas.
Mi esperanza es que avancemos juntos con compasión, transparencia y un compromiso compartido con la justicia, la equidad y la accesibilidad para toda nuestra comunidad sorda.
