We want to wish our families and friends a happy healthy and safe thanksgiving 2024 we’re almost into 2025 we made it! But I also want to take the time to hopefully spread some education and also understanding that today for some of our families and friends this is also a day of mourning and our hearts and thoughts are with you. For many Native Americans, Thanksgiving is a complex and often painful holiday, as it is tied to a history of colonization, loss, and resilience. While the traditional Thanksgiving narrative celebrates cooperation and gratitude, it often overlooks the devastating impact European settlement had on Indigenous peoples.

A Day of Mourning for Some

For some Native Americans, Thanksgiving is observed as a National Day of Mourning, a time to remember the suffering and genocide that followed colonization. It highlights the broken treaties, loss of land, forced assimilation, and the near-erasure of Native cultures and languages. This observance, held annually in places like Plymouth, Massachusetts, honors the resilience of Native peoples and acknowledges the truth of their history.

A Time for Gratitude and Connection

At the same time, gratitude is deeply embedded in many Indigenous cultures, independent of the Thanksgiving holiday. Native communities have long traditions of giving thanks for the earth’s abundance, the changing seasons, and the interconnectedness of all life. For some, the day is an opportunity to gather with family, share meals, and honor their own cultural practices.

Reclaiming Narratives

In recent years, Native voices have been working to reclaim the Thanksgiving narrative, educating others about the true history of the holiday and the resilience of Indigenous peoples. For Native Americans, Thanksgiving can be a day of mourning, reflection, education, and connection, making it a uniquely multifaceted occasion.

Today, we stand in deep gratitude and admiration for each of you—the brave men and women who have sacrificed time with loved ones, safety, comfort, and so much more, so that we may enjoy our freedoms. Your dedication is an example of true courage and selflessness, and your strength is a source of inspiration for us all. Not only did you serve to protect our country, but you also brought hope, compassion, and humanity into places that needed it most. At 1st Academy our toddlers and Ms.Jessica worked on the shape triangle, the color red, the number 2, and the letter I. These kiddos worked hard on potty training and expressing themselves using I phrases “I like my lunch” “I feel happy today” “I want to play in blocks” we welcomed two new friends this week who made it a joy to show all of our toys too and learn during circle time with!
