Teamwork among students and robots wins international competition 08/23/2024

Desert WAVE, an all-female robotics team, won first place in the Autonomy Challenge at the RoboSub international competition in Irvine, California. They were up against 41 teams from eight countries and earned their top spot by taking an innovative approach to the challenge.

The team won the competition using two robots in tandem to complete the required tasks. Those robots, Dragon and Baby Dragon, worked together to complete the missions. The team was one of few teams to risk adding another robot to its entry and it paid off as they scored nearly 70% higher than the next team in the final phase of the competition.

The team is a partnership between Arizona State University and the Si Se Puede Foundation. Its mission is to provide a supportive and engaging environment in which female engineering students can come together to advance their skills and accomplish amazing things. Congratulations to the team on their big win!

Today is Orville Wright’s birthday and National Aviation Day. We are proud of our programs and how our students contribute to the aviation industry.

Maxwell Richter graduated in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical management technology (air transportation management). He currently works for a major airline in Texas as a Specialist of Inflight Training Instruction and Evaluation and supports new hires and annual recurrent flight attendant training programs.

“One of the best parts of my degree program was the ability to participate in a few internships that provided the connections and experience needed to be successful after graduation," Richter says. "My professors also had their own experience within the industry that helped provide us with the tools and knowledge we needed to be successful."

🖨This past spring, students taking Introduction to Commercial Printing, offered by the graphic information technology program, had the opportunity to visit District Photo as a part of the University Inkjet program that ASU participates in.

🖨Accompanied by Patricia Perigo, faculty associate in the graphic information technology (GIT) program, students were able to see the equipment used in their facility and apply the knowledge they have learned in the classroom.

🖨This also brings back valuable real-world experience that can be put into practice in the ASU Print and Imaging Lab that is run by GIT students. What a great experience for our students!

👏We have great things happening out of the Human-in-Mind Engineering Research Lab, or HiMER, which is directed by Heejin Jeong, assistant professor of human systems engineering. The lab hires all levels of students and is interdisciplinary in nature with multiple degree programs represented.

🏆This past semester, Hari Iyer, a doctoral student in human systems engineering, received the Student of the Year award at the Applied Ergonomics Conference 2024 for his work Evaluating Ergonomic Risk in Culinary Tasks: A Computer Vision Approach. He also received the Best Presentation award at the GPSA Inaugural Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition last month. This involved being able to effectively explain his research to a non-specialist audience in three minutes. Congratulations Hari!

🏆Also working in the lab is Allison Bayro, a doctoral student in biomedical engineering. She received the ARCS Foundation award for the 2024-25 academic year for her work Bridging the Gap: Investigating the Role of Physiological Indicators in Capturing Cognitive State Changes among Naval Personnel.
