Mesa Community College Theatre & Film Arts Presents: Picasso at the Lapin Agile

Meet the Director: Joshua Murphy

Joshua Murphy is a Phoenix-based director, actor, and educator serving as Performance Faculty at Mesa Community College. Select directing credits include the national tour of Calculus: The Musical! for the Know Theatre of Cincinnati and multiple tours for Southwest Shakespeare Company. As a performer, he has worked coast to coast, with roles including Louis in Angels in America (Know Theatre), Pericles in Pericles and the Creature in Frankenstein (Southwest Shakespeare), and Lenck in Bach at Leipzig (Cidermill Playhouse). He holds an M.F.A. from Western Illinois University

What would happen if Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso met in a Parisian café in 1904, just before they changed the world forever? In his hilarious and insightful play, comedy legend Steve Martin imagines this improbable rendezvous. As these two titans of the 20th century debate art, science, and the nature of genius, they discover their groundbreaking ideas have more in common than they ever imagined. A witty, surreal, and surprisingly profound comedy that proves that sometimes, the smartest people in the room can also be the funniest.

Pablo Picasso's 1905 oil painting, Au Lapin Agile ("At the Lapin Agile") helped to make this cabaret world-famous. The cabaret has been captured on canvas by other Montmartre artists, such as Roman Greco and Maurice Utrillo (A French painter).

This Week: Witch

Written by Jen Silverman
Directed by Amie Bjorklund

A MCC Black Box Show

A charming devil arrives in the quiet village of Edmonton with a simple offer: your soul for your deepest wish. The townspeople are quick to line up, but he finds an unexpected challenge in Elizabeth, an outcast whom everyone already believes to be a "witch." Unlike the others, her soul is not for sale. As this unlikely pair—the clever devil and the woman with nothing to lose—spar and flirt, the play explodes with dark humor and incisive wit. A modern fable for a cynical age, Witch asks a timeless question: what is the price of a soul, and what is its true value when hope is so hard to find? Prepare for a smart and spellbinding play that casts an intoxicating spell and debates how much our souls are worth when hope is hard to come by.

Performance Dates: Mar. 13 (Sold Out), Mar. 14, Mar. 26, Mar. 27 at 7:30 pm and Mar. 14 (Sold Out) & Mar. 28 at 2 pm
