Every year the Maricopa County Farm Bureau hosts an Agriculture Communication contest asking youth members across the county to present their agricultural story to the public. Alisa Velasquez illustrated her family’s story and the continuous presence her grandfather has as she writes her agricultural story. Alisa Velasquez was awarded Senior Champion for the Agriculture Communication Contest!

Meet Aubry Stockman, a Junior, raising her market lamb Truffle. Aubry has done a great job this year in her 2nd lamb project. She has worked hard to balance work, caring for truffle, academics, cheer and her family.

Aubry is auctioning Truffle in the largestock auction tomorrow at 10am in the Ag Center at the state fairgrounds.

Meet Alisa Velasquez, a Senior, raising her first market lamb Bluey Ruff. Alisa has put the work into Bluey to make him the best Southdown he can be.

This week, Alisa had multiple call backs in the Southdown classes and Senior Novice sheep showmanship! Alisa is auctioning Bluey in the largestock auction Saturday at 10am in the Ag Center at the state fairgrounds.

Last but certainly not least meet Kailah Rodriguez, a Freshman, raising and showing her market goats Maverick and Goose. As a first year showman in Maricopa County, Kailah has made a name for herself.

This week, Kailah earned Reserve Champion Heavyweight market goat, Champion Intermediate Novice Goat Showman, Champion Intermediate Goat Showman and Reserve Intermediate Showman for Round Robin. Kailah is auctioning her market goat in the largestock auction Saturday at 10am in the Ag Center at the state fairgrounds.

Next up we have Lilly Flick, a Freshman, raising her first market goat Yolo. As a first year showman, Lilly has worked hard to train and build her skill set.

Through Lilly’s hard work, she was able to earn Reserve Champion Intermediate Novice Goat Showman at her first fair! Lilly is auctioning Yolo in the largestock auction Saturday at 10am in the Ag Center at the state fairgrounds.

Next up we have Abigail Hurst, a Sophomore, raising her first market goat Negan. As a first year showman, Abbey has worked hard to forge a bond with Negan.

This week, Abbey did amazing in the ring by placing 3rd overall for senior novice goat showmanship. Abbey is auctioning Negan in the largestock auction Saturday at 10am in the Ag Center at the state fairgrounds.

Meet Katlynn McNiel, a Junior, raising her market lamb Dum Dum. Katlynn has spent breeding and market week showing off Dum Dum.

Katlynn currently serves as the chapter Treasurer and wears many hats throughout our program. Katlynn is auctioning Dum Dum in the largestock auction Saturday at 10am in the Ag Center at the state fairgrounds.

Meet Aurora Kimbrough -Smyth, a Junior, raising her natural ewe, Ceto. Aurora has been crafting her sheep showmanship this year, while, attending many stock shows.

This week, Aurora and Ceto were class winners for breeding and had multiple call backs in market and showmanship. Aurora is auctioning Ceto in the largestock auction Saturday at 10am in the Ag Center at the state fairgrounds.

Meet James Zamora, a junior, raising his first lamb Mabel. James has been raising his Southdown all year and was pulled for overall Southdown and senior novice showman.

James has worked hard on learning animal nutrition and handling. James plans to invest in his first cattle project next year. James is auctioning Mabel in the largestock auction tomorrow at 10am in the Ag Center at the state fairgrounds.

Next up we have Holly Penne, a Junior, raising her first market lamb Cherry. As a first year FFA member and first year showman, Holly has brought the intensity to the ring.

This week, Cherry was 5th overall Southdown and Holly was 5th overall for Senior Novice showman. Holly is auctioning Cherry in the largestock auction tomorrow at 10am in the Ag Center at the state fairgrounds.

Next up we have Jasmine Resendiz, a Senior, raising her 2nd market lamb Arlo. Jasmine rocked the ring for the last time in Senior showmanship and judging.

Meet Ethan Massey, a sophomore, raising his first lamb Gonzo. Ethan has participated all week in showmanship and judging with his Southdown.

Ethan is heavily involved with the Dobson drama program and has spent the year juggling Gonzo and stagecraft including last week’s SpongeBob the Musical. Ethan is auctioning Gonzo in the largestock auction tomorrow at 10am in the Ag Center at the state fairgrounds.

Meet Isaac Cone, a sophomore, raising his first lamb Buttercup. Isaac has participated all week in Breeding and Market with his ewe. Isaac was named Reserve Champion Senior Novice showman for Breeding.

Isaac prides himself on his financial management skills and his bond with Buttercup. Isaac plans to invest in his first cattle project next year. Isaac is auctioning Buttercup in the largestock auction tomorrow at 10am in the Ag Center at the state fairgrounds.

Meet our 2024 Maricopa County Fair Poultry Exhibitors! Dobson FFA had 8 students this week show their chickens, ducks, turkeys and fancy pigeons. Sofia Wong, Xavier Garcia, Melodie Myers, Mechelle Gamez, Travis Reece, Kayleen Santiago Vielma, Abigail Hurst and Andrew Streicher have worked tirelessly to showcase their birds to the best of their abilities earning best of varieties, reserve of their species and many blue and red ribbons this week!

Tonight at 7pm, 3 of our students will be auctioning in the small stock auction at the state fair grounds in the Ag Center!

Meet Sofia Wong, she is a junior this year and in her first year showing silkies. This is Sofia’s first Maricopa County Fair and she did great in showmanship and judging. She showed her white silkie Popcorn, where Popcorn showed her best in the ring!

Meet Andrew Streicher, he is a junior this year and is heavily involved in our turkey projects at Dobson. This is Andrew’s third Maricopa County Fair in the poultry department. Over the past two years Andrew has had his hen Jenny and is very thankful for the poultry show happening this year!

While in high school, Andrew has loved raising turkeys and is excited to start his turkey breeding operation this year. Andrew is auctioning Jenny in the small stock auction tomorrow at 7pm at the Ag Center at the state fairgrounds.

Meet Mechelle Gamez, she is a senior this year and in her first year in our program. This is Mechelle’s first Maricopa County Fair and she did amazing in showmanship and judging! She showed her two medium weight ducks Romeo and Juliet, where Romeo received the award of Reserve overall for medium weight ducks!

Mechelle has a love for animals and has truly stepped out of her comfort zone this year. Mechelle is auctioning Romeo in the small stock auction tomorrow at 7pm at the Ag Center at the state fairgrounds.

Dobson FFA had a great start to the 2024 Maricopa County Fair in breeding weekend! Aurora, Isaac, Kailey and Katlynn showed off their breeding ewes today and did amazing in showmanship and breeding classes.

A few weeks ago Innovative Agriculture students enjoyed the experience of touring Pinal Feeding Company. Students toured the mill, feedlot and learned about the operation from start to finish.
