Instead of the 5 Stages of Grief, many therapists use the 4 Tasks of Grief framework created by Dr. J. William Worden. I prefer it for both my personal work and in my practice.

The only place I diverge from his tasks is that they are specifically written to cope with someone’s death, and I adapt them to be appropriate for any type of loss.

The 4 tasks he outlined are:

1. Accept the reality of the loss
2. Process the pain of grief
3. Adjust to a world without the deceased
4. Find an enduring connection to the deceased while embarking on a new life

My reworking of these tasks (which have no timeline) looks like this:

1. Help your brain process the reality of the loss, which is a messy process that is not a one and done. Some days this is obvious, and other days (especially in an ongoing traumatic situation) it is impossible.

2. Help your brain deactivate any trauma responses so you can access the grief.(It’s hard to process the pain of a loss until it’s both over and until your brain knows it has happened. Ongoing trauma and trauma loops can keep us stuck.)

3. Do an inventory of which rituals and relationships need to change. After loss, sometimes boundaries are required, sometimes physically relocating is required…this task is to assess whatever life things need to adjust.

4. Learn to live in the new shape that grief carves us into. Easier said than done. And it’s never “done.”

Disclaimer: No one “owns” the grieving process. Do what makes sense for you.

Bio: J. William Worden, PhD, ABPP, is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and holds academic appointments at Harvard Medical School and the Rosemead Graduate School of Psychology in California. His work is widely used around the world as the standard reference on the subject.

It’s such a low bar. It’s safe for you but you make yourself feel unsafe to others, especially women.

And the most self-absorbed asshats I’ve ever met are self proclaimed “nicest guy you’ll ever meet.”
