🌳 Welcome to Shade Tree Academy!

Located in Mesa, Arizona, Shade Tree Academy was created specifically for children impacted by foster care.

Our mission is to provide a trauma-informed approach to education—one that recognizes how a child’s experiences can impact learning, behavior, relationships, and emotional well-being.

We look beyond behaviors to understand the needs underneath them. Through small class sizes, meaningful relationships, individualized academics, and opportunities to build regulation and resilience, we create an environment where students can feel safe enough to learn and supported enough to grow.

Because children who have experienced hard things don’t need lower expectations. They need an educational environment that understands them and gives them the tools to succeed.

🐿️ Meet Flash the Squirrel! 💚

Last spring, our students were invited to submit their ideas for the official Shade Tree Academy mascot. We loved seeing their creativity, but one idea stood out—a squirrel, submitted by one of our high school students!

And the more we thought about it, the more perfect it felt. 🌳

Squirrels are resilient, resourceful, curious, energetic, and determined. They prepare for the future, adapt when things don’t go as planned, and keep climbing—even when the path gets difficult.

Those qualities remind us so much of our students. At Shade Tree Academy, we celebrate every step forward, encourage curiosity, build confidence, and remind our students that challenges don’t define what they are capable of becoming.

So we are excited to officially introduce the newest member of the Shade Tree family…

📚 Reading together makes a difference!

Reading with your child at home—even for just 10–15 minutes a day—helps build vocabulary, strengthen reading skills, improve comprehension, and create positive connections around learning.

At Shade Tree Academy, we’re making reading FUN with monthly reading challenges! 🌳📖 Students can reach reading goals, celebrate their progress, and earn special prizes along the way.

🎁 Want to help encourage our young readers? We are accepting donations of small prizes for our monthly reading challenges! Your donation can help give a student that extra little spark of motivation to pick up a book and keep reading.

Three weeks into the new school year, and Shade Tree Academy is thriving! 🌳💛

Our new school building is already feeling like home, our incredible teachers are creating classrooms where students feel supported and known, and we’re excited about what we’re seeing in our students.

We still have a few openings in grades 1–3 and high school for families looking for a smaller, trauma-informed school environment with individualized academic support and a focus on helping every child build confidence and resilience.

We have had such an amazing first week of school! This space has been so grounding for the children who walk through our doors. We are so grateful to the Hansen family who made real sacrifices to making this beautiful school a reality! Another amazing contributor to this project was Kim Dalton Dalton Interiors AZ who has dedicated her career to creating healing spaces for children by bringing nature in. We are so proud of what we have been able to create and grateful for all the support it took to get here!
