The Signing Place

The Signing Place Hi everyone, my name is Sierra Place! I’m deaf & wear hearing aids. I’m an ASL teacher, deaf mentor & advocate. P.S.

Check out this page to learn more about me & what I do! This used to be SD Signs so you’re at the right place!

It's that time of the year again...Back to school! This will be my 6th year teaching (but only 4th year at RMHS). Each year has been truly unique in its own way, with group and individual growth that's been made, wonderful collaboraton opportunites, and shared stories of meeting other D/deaf or Hoh community members. I can't wait to see what this next school year brings!

I teach ASL not only to break down barriers, but to equip students with practical, lifelong communication skills they can carry into any future profession—whether in healthcare, education, business, or as future certified interpreters. There is nothing quite like watching a student's confidence grow as their hands become a voice, knowing that every sign learned empowers them to make their future workplaces, and our world, more inclusive and accessible.

If you're interested in providing materials or supporting our ASL program at Red Mountain High School, please check out my amazon wishlist. Everything in it goes towards our classroom, activities, or students for rewards.

I've been working on this for a few weeks when time allowed me to do so...wrestled with myself to figure out whether to share or not. Then, I realized it was another chance to reframe my mindset. I also felt it was better to share in case it helped even just one person.

Take what you need! 🤍🤟🏻

Former ASL student Callie decided to volunteer for Full Bloom camp - hosted by

We love it when we see our ASL students involved in Deaf/ASL events, organizations & camps! 🤩 The more involved you are in the community... the more you BLOOM in your ASL skills! 🌱 Callie will be continuing her ASL studies in Hawaii & hopefully coming back to AZ to interpret.

PS the amount of times people have asked us if we are sisters is wild! 😂 (but yes, we are in fact, sisters in Christ!!)

(This post gave me an idea - more former student spotlights to come soon....)

Pictured: new piercings (because why not when it's summer + almost your birthday?!)

Not pictured: a super sweet lady who knew ASL was able to fully explain the process + help me with placement of my earrings so they wouldn't bother my hearing aid. 🦻

One of many examples of why using ASL in ANY job is so beneficial! We love it when this happens! More please💛

I've been meaning to get this movie for a while, and now it's here! It's perfect timing to get it right before Easter. If you haven't seen it, let's watch it together! Should I host a movie night?

I'm not sure how this started, but my son's new favorite thing is "I hear something!" 👂☝🏻😲 (we're working on "I see something", too!)

And he loves to describe it, whether it's through signs/gestures or talking, or both. Most of the time, he's telling me what he really hears (which helps me!!), but recently, he's been more imaginative. Either way, he loves to interpret it for me. KISS-FIST! 🤍✊🏻
