What does progress look like in therapy? There are many clients that ask this question hoping to have a burst of enlightenment or transcend to the skies with their life or circumstance. The truth is self development and healing is an ongoing process, but doesn't mean therapy has to be. A therapist will track goals that were developed in the beginning of counseling, but how is that YOU know? It's quite simple...ask these 3 questions:
1. Do I feel the same way about the problem from when I started?
2. Am I able to now identify my feelings vs run away or suppress?
3. Do I see a better change in my habits/behaviors with symptoms?
If yes, therapy seems to be working and it may be time to re-evaluate if you need to continue.

There is a shifting culture of mental awareness increasing and it's good! However, there is also a trend of buzzwords, self improvement, positivity memes, and introspection quotes that pushes individuals to be aware ALL THE TIME π΅ Remember, we are human first and too much of a good thing can still be too much. Unplug, relax and remember that you are not a self improvement machine. There will be mistakes made, motivation decreased and moods shown and doesn't mean you are horrible. Awareness is about safety and sanity not perfectionism. Continue to grow and also highlight where you are too because it's okay.

Expression does not equal weakness. It takes courage to express ourselves, and a weak minded individual hinders expressing shame, resentment, fear and judgement. Do not downplay the power of expression as it has served its greatest purpose throughout human history....forming connections.

Meditation can be a powerful tool and has many cognitive and physiological benefits. However a common myth about meditation is that its purpose is to "clear your mind" or "calm your body." For beginners and individuals with high stress and anxiety this will not occur, and the practice becomes unfilling and frustrating. The true meaning of mediation is to observe and pay attention to your body reactions, sensations and feelings. The benefit is that people feel less stressed because they are paying attention π
