Florida offers families a free program called New Worlds Reading that helps VPK – 5th graders build their reading skills. Enrolled students get: 9 books that families choose each school year in English, Spanish, Haitian Creole, or braille, and reading guides and activities that help kids develop their literacy skills.

Available books include popular series like Clifford the Big Red Dog and The Magic School Bus.

There is no income requirement to participate! The program was created and funded by our state legislature, so it really is free for eligible families. 80% of VPK-5th graders in Florida public and charter schools qualify, so when in doubt, fill the application out! Apply today at newworldsreading.com.

Earlier we shared about the Sales Surtax.

The second measure on November's ballot is the 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞 — a property tax renewal that funds the teachers, programs, and technology that make learning happen every day in Brevard County classrooms.

Millage is the small portion of property taxes that stays right here in Brevard County, locally approved by voters to directly support Brevard Public Schools. Every dollar collected goes to the people and programs inside our schools.

Millage funds three things: 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐲, 𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲.

𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐝.

Surtax funding supports a range of physical security improvements across Brevard Public Schools. This is not a new tax. The half-cent sales surtax is an existing funding source that voters are being asked to renew.

These investments include secure single-point entry, upgraded locks and gates, reinforced front office safety features, expanded security camera coverage, and modern emergency alert systems.

Every visitor entering a school is directed through the front office for check-in, helping schools monitor access and maintain secure learning environments.

These upgrades create safer entrances, give schools greater visibility across the property, and make it possible to respond quickly in an emergency.

Surtax helps ensure schools have the safety infrastructure needed to help protect students and staff.

This November, two local funding measures are on the ballot. Neither are new. Both are already in place. The first is the Sales Surtax - a sales tax renewal funds safe, maintained, and modern school facilities. The Surtax is the small portion of sales tax that stays right here in Brevard to keep school buildings safe, in good repair, and up to date. It funds three things: secure buildings, facility investments, and technology infrastructure. Over the next several weeks, we'll share more about what the Surtax funds.
