On Wednesday, HOSA students traveled to Indianapolis to compete in the State Leadership Conference (SLC). This three-day competition requires significant preparation, dedication, and academic effort.
We are proud to share that five students from Merrillville CNA 1 and CNA 2 programs placed in the top five among competitors from high schools and career centers across the state of Indiana. Out of the 15 students who attended, the following individuals earned top-five recognition:
Cyanne Kelly (Sophomore) – 4th place, Medical Law and Ethics
Tyceanna Darling (Junior)– 5th place, Nutrition
Nyla Arthur (Senior) – 4th place, Nursing Assistant
Davona Cochran (Senior) – 3rd place, Personal/Nursing Assistant
Janiah Washington (Junior) – 4th place, Personal Care/Nursing Assistant
Please join us in congratulating these students on their outstanding achievements. We also commend all participants for their commitment and willingness to compete. This year’s conference included approximately 2,700 students representing schools from across Indiana, making these accomplishments especially noteworthy.

Both of our Mock Trial teams will be competing this weekend at the State Competition. If you are in Indianapolis and would like to volunteer, they are still looking for judges. The biggest needs are the morning rounds Saturday and Sunday. You don't need to be a lawyer but some legal knowledge or Mock Trial experience is helpful.

From Mrs. Reinhart: I am so proud of our Merrillville ISSMA State Solo and Ensemble participants! Nine of our ten ensembles received gold except one trio, which missed it by 1/2 point. Three of the gold ensembles were with distinction! Sixteen soloists were awarded gold, three with distinction. A handful of soloists missed gold by a point or less.
Special shout-outs to Gold With Distinction soloists Seniors Samantha Sampson and Dehren Young, Sophomore Aubrielle Evans, and Freshman Vittoria Madrigal, as well as the Vocalteen Men (near-perfect score), McGee and Choralteen White ensembles.
All around, it was a great day of beautiful music. I am extremely proud of the singers who prepared difficult repertoire for multiple events (6 for several students!) Hats off to some of my Noteables who stepped in to fill some vacancies for their classmates. To all my singers: Your musicianship, dedication, and teamwork throughout this process have been a pleasure to witness. Congratulations to you all!
