When stress spikes, your attention can change before you have time to think about it. You may experience auditory exclusion, tunnel vision, or time distortion. These are normal physiological responses, not a character flaw.
The practical countermeasure is mental rehearsal: picture the setting, identify your pause point, notice the exits, and decide what your next safe action will be before pressure rises.
Try this simple exercise once this week:
At a familiar entrance, parking area, or public location, pause for 60 seconds. Put your phone down. Identify two exits, choose a place where you could stop and assess, and quietly rehearse: “Pause. Breathe. Look. Decide.” Then picture yourself taking one calm, appropriate next step.
You may face situations where no one is immediately coming to help. Being your own first responder matters. A usable plan helps you make safer decisions when your body speeds up.
