WE’VE BEEN NOMINATED AGAIN!

We are thrilled to announce that Goshinkan Dojo has once again been nominated for the FourLeaf Best of Long Island Awards!

For over over 4 decades, we’ve been proud to share the art of Japanese Ju-Jitsu with our community, helping students of all ages build confidence, discipline, respect, and lifelong friendships.

We are incredibly grateful to our students, families, and supporters who continue to make our dojo such a special place.

As one grows, we all grow. Congratulations to all of our students who tested today! We are so proud of the hard work, determination, and spirit you showed on the mat. And a special thank you to the students who came out to train and support their fellow students on their big day, that’s what being part of a dojo family is all about. When it is your turn, they will show up for you the same way!

Enjoy those new belts, you earned them! Keep learning, keep growing, and keep moving forward! 🥋👏

Good morning, everyone! As of right now, our Kids Belt Test is still ON for this morning as scheduled at 10 am.

With the rainy and windy weather, however, we completely understand that conditions may vary depending on where you are traveling from. Please use your own judgment and make the decision that feels safest and most comfortable for your family.

If your child is unable to attend the test today, no worries at all! We will simply complete their belt test during one of their regular weekly classes. They will not miss their opportunity to test.

Please stay safe, and we look forward to seeing everyone who is able to make it this morning!

🥋 Belt Test Reminder for This Saturday!

Just a reminder that we have a Kids Belt Promotion this Saturday at 10:00 AM, which will take the place of our usual 10:00 AM Kids Class.

For this Saturday only, our 11:00 AM class will be open to ALL ranks for anyone who would normally attend the 10:00 AM class.

Students who are testing should still attend their regular class this week as usual. The belt promotion is a separate event and does not count as one of their regular monthly classes.

Just a reminder for Saturday, September 26th! Our Kids Belt Test will be taking place during our usual 10:00 AM class time, so there will be no regular 10:00 AM Kids Class that day. For this day only, our 11:00 AM class will be OPEN TO ALL BELT RANKS so anyone who normally attends at 10:00 AM can join us at 11:00 instead! Please make note of the schedule change, and we’ll see everyone on the mat!

Today marks 25 years since September 11, 2001.

A quarter of a century has passed, yet for so many, the memories of that day remain vivid. We remember the nearly 3,000 lives taken far too soon. We remember the firefighters, police officers, EMTs and other first responders who ran toward danger while others were trying to escape it. We remember those who risked and gave their lives to save strangers, the families who waited for loved ones who would never come home, and all those whose lives were forever changed.

For the Goshinkan Dojo family, September 11th also carries a deeply personal loss. On that day, we lost three members of our dojo family:

Bruce Gary
Wayne Saloman
Brian McDonnell

They walked through our doors, trained on our mats, and became part of the history of this dojo. 25 years later, their names remain part of that history, and we continue to honor their memory.

Many of the students on our mats today were not yet born on September 11, 2001. Some of their parents were only children themselves. As the years continue to pass, remembering becomes even more important.

We tell the stories.
We speak their names.
We remember the courage.
We remember the sacrifice.
We remember the unity.
And we remember the lives… not only how they were lost, but that they were lived.

Today we honor Bruce, Wayne and Brian, along with every life lost that September morning, the heroes who answered the call, the families who carried an unimaginable loss forward, and those who continue to live with the effects of that day.

A reminder to all parents: please know where your children are, who they are with, and what they are doing.

It is incredibly disappointing to see something like this happening in our own community, especially in a space meant to be safe and welcoming for young children and families.

At Goshinkan Dojo, we talk often about respect, self-control, responsibility, and making good choices, and those lessons don’t end when we step off the mat.

Our kids and teens are growing up in a world where they have more independence as they get older, but they still need guidance, boundaries, and accountability from the adults in their lives.

Please talk to your children. Know what they’re doing when they’re out with friends. Remind them that how they behave when no adult is standing beside them says a great deal about their character.

Respect isn’t something we practice only when someone is watching.

A new school year is almost here, and we want to wish all of our Goshinkan students a fantastic year ahead! Whether you’re starting kindergarten, heading into middle school or high school, or simply moving up to the next grade, a new school year brings new teachers, new challenges, new friendships and new opportunities to grow.

And remember, the things we practice at the dojo don’t stay on the mat.

🥋 Confidence when you walk into a new classroom.
🥋 Respect for your teachers and classmates.
🥋 Focus when it’s time to learn.
🥋 Perseverance when something feels difficult.
🥋 Courage to try something new.
🥋 Kindness toward the kid who might be nervous or need a friend.

You’ve already practiced doing hard things. You’ve learned to get back up when you fall, keep trying when something doesn’t come easily, and believe in yourself a little more each time. Take those lessons with you into the classroom.
