We celebrated the 10th Annual West Ada Education Foundation Gala on March 3rd at the Galaxy Event Center and provided support for their event team with our Live and Silent Auction services to help them raise an impressive $105,000! Their live auction was facilitated by expert auctioneer, Kent Corbett, who did an amazing job keeping the crowd engaged. Our event manager trained all volunteers and entered sales from the live auction and paddle raise, and bid sheets were printed through our auction package. It's wonderful to know that the funds raised will be going back to our community through area schools and improving programs for eager young learners in West Ada County. We also want to give a big congratulations to Bernadette Sexton on her retirement, which was announced that evening at the Gala. We wish her and her husband all the best as they explore this new chapter of their lives!

Proud to support our amazing schools and programs, including Mountain View High School Choir

The MVHS Music Department is so thankful to share that our 2022-2023 Music Grant was accepted earlier this year which gave us the money to buy brand new Performance Acoustical Shells for the department! This was definitely a need for us and we are so grateful for all the individuals who helped make this happen. Thank you for helping boost the beautiful music created by our students here at Mountain View! Go Mavs!
“Acoustical sound shells are great for improving the sound projection of your performances and the acoustics of a room. (They) go behind the performance to help enhance the sound projection by providing a solid surface to help focus the sound into the audience.” (StageRight, 2019)”

It's Heart Healthy February! Donate to the Education Foundation of the West Ada School District to purchase AED's in our schools.

Throughout the month of February, American Heart Month, West Ada School District seeks to raise funds to provide automated external defibrillators (AED) to schools and athletic programs. An AED is a medical device designed to deliver an electric shock to a person with an abnormal heart rhythm causing sudden cardiac arrest. The delivery of the shock most often restores a normal heart rhythm.

“While schools are not required to have AED devices, we feel this is an important step in being prepared for any cardiac emergency,” said Tracey Garner, RN, Supervisor of Health Services at West Ada School District. “In addition to providing potentially life-saving services for students and staff, our schools host a variety of extracurricular activities. Visiting community members may also need assistance from these devices,” continued Garner.

The goal is to purchase one AED per school and to provide portable AEDs for athletic programs throughout the district. Medical-grade AEDs cost approximately $1,550 - $2,000 per unit. Having already raised $6,000 toward this initiative, West Ada School District hopes to raise an additional $69,000.

“Student and staff safety is our utmost priority in each school building,” said Dr. Derek Bub, Superintendent of West Ada School District. “Having an AED in each school will provide a safe environment for all. Should a crisis take place, our schools will be more prepared to provide emergency medical assistance,” Bub stated.

To support West Ada School District in this initiative, you may:

• Visit the West Ada Education Foundation website and submit an online donation with “Nursing - AED” selected as the designation - https://www.westada.org/o/educationfoundation/page/donate
• Mail a check to the West Ada Education Foundation with “Nursing - AED” in the memo; 1303 E Central Drive, Meridian, ID 83642
• Make an in-person donation by visiting the West Ada District Service Center; 1303 E Central Drive, Meridian, ID 83642

Congratulations to and senior Shelby Wallace, who signed a Student To Registered Apprenticeship Program (STRAP) agreement with Sheet Metal Workers Local 55 and will be employed as an apprentice with . We have the best Board of Directors! We can't thank them enough for their commitment to the students and educators of West Ada Schools. Let's give it up for Board member Andy Pfost as we shine a 🎇spotlight🎇 on him and all his hard work and dedication to our board. Thank you Andy!!

🔷Number of years served on the board: 3 years

🔷What drew you to serve on the board? I had both kids go through West Ada and love the charter of the foundation to focus on how we can help the teachers, help the kids.

🔷What do you love most about West Ada Schools? I love that the biggest district in the state can still feel small and that each school has such a strong focus on how to not only educate the kids but take care of them emotionally, physically and mentally.

🔷Tell us something that is on your bucket list: I have a reverse bucket list, these are things I've marked off like a marathon, as in, I know I'll never run one so I marked that off 😊

🔷Hobbies: My favorite hobby is my family and anything we can do spend time together. I love old cars and have a 1966 Mercury Comet that my parents bought in Nampa in 1967.

🔷Fun Fact: I won a blue ribbon at the Idaho state fair in 1983 for oil painting

"Receiving this grant means all my students have access to use their own set of headphones, which is so crucial to not only their learning but their sense of belonging and inclusion among their peers in the classroom."

We were moved earlier this year when Emma expressed how much this grant meant to her and the students at Barbara Morgan STEM Academy. Receiving the funds to purchase new headphones means that hearing on devices will be accessible to ALL students. This will enhance the learning experience in the classroom! 🎧💙

"This is truly an amazing thing to happen for Lake Hazel. This gives kids the opportunity to understand what healthy food looks like and how easily it can be grown in containers or in personal gardens." ~Charlie Ecker

Earlier this year Heather Jackson and co-teacher Charlie Ecker were awarded a Farm to School grant. Originally the vision for this grant was to build a greenhouse at the school but with the purchase of 6 lights, 2 4x4 tents, soil, seeds, tools and other accessories for the students to assist in their project, their grant will still be fulfilling these teachers' dreams of creating a garden and gardening club at Lake Hazel Middle School. They grew starts for carrots, peppers, tomatoes, herbs and watermelon in their classroom. They also planted 16 strawberry plants and a raspberry plant in an unused garden bed outside the school.

We love hearing how this grant has impacted their students, even the ones who claimed they disliked eating vegetables. They loved eating the lettuce they grew together and even had several students say this experience inspired them to want to garden at their own homes.

Ms. Jackson & Mr. Ecker have future plans to add fruit trees, build more raised beds on the property to help beautify Lake Hazel and add flowers around teachers windows. We can't wait to check back with them and see how their gardening club continues to blossom.

🔒 We've all been there, a brand new student in middle school fumbling with a combination lock for the first time, stressing out and feeling anxious because the tardy bell is ringing. Lena Penry was previously a counselor at a middle school before she came to Summerwind STEM Academy and counseled many students in the hallway because they could not work through the stress of opening their locker. She recognized this took a lot of time away from student learning and wanted to do something to help with the transition to middle school.

This sparked an idea to apply for a grant through the Education Foundation that would fund combination locks. She created a mini middle school where students were able to move from classroom to classroom for different activities that would help with their transition to middle school. They learned how to map out their schedule using a Lowell-Scott Middle School map, and they practiced using the combination locks all while having time to transition between the activities as they would in middle school. After their participation in mini middle school, her students expressed excitement for this next chapter. The stress and fear of moving on to a bigger school was now met with excitement.

We were moved by the efforts Ms. Penry took to make these students feel comfortable in their transition to middle school and as a Foundation we were delighted to award her a grant in 2021 to make it happen.

What a relief it was for Glenna Newby and her Eagle Elementary School of the Arts students when she heard the news she had received an ART grant for the 2020/2021 year. This grant provided materials such as drum sticks, Lummi sticks, hand bells, glockenspiels, craft sticks, mini-egg shakers as well as movement manipulatives such as scarves, ribbons and bands.

Although there were strict safety protocols in place due to Covid-19, Glenna and her students adapted and were able to use the materials and instruments that were purchased through the grant to prepare virtual music performances that were shared with the families.

"Our school benefits from this excellent resource, enhancing students learning through the Covid-19 Pandemic. Thank you to the West Ada Foundation for awarding these grant monies."

🎣 This grant is the REEL deal!

We caught up with Jonathan Keller of Meridian Middle School to hear more about the "Keepin' it reel' grant he received in January. He was overjoyed at the chance to show students alternative ways to spend their time and give them opportunities to experience the outdoors and become stewards of the land.

The impact this will have on his students will get them outdoors, teach skills of stress management, problem solving, patience and will enable them to learn about fishing and how to be caretakers of the land.

Next year, Jonathan is hoping to expand this program to an all-school effort. His vision is to give the students something to focus on and skills that would benefit them and our lands and would be useful for the future generations.
