Hi parents and guardians, here is some updated information from Principal Wilhite.
Q. I'm still a little confused on what to do if my kid is sick and/or I think they may have been exposed to a COVID positive individual at home or in the community. Can you clarify the process?
Yes. Let's talk through the scenarios below:
Scenario 1: My student is not feeling well, what should I do?
Keep them home.
Call the school 208-350-4130 and report their absence and let the secretary know that your student is not feeling well and you've decided to keep them home.
Your student will be coded in PowerSchool as "ILL".
The "ILL" coding in PowerSchool informs the teacher that they need to offer synchronous instruction for your student. They will schedule a TEAMs meeting for your student the following day during their class period. See the HMS Bell Schedule. Your student should log on to their meeting within 5 minutes of the start of the class period. https://www.westada.org/Page/88799.
*If your student is not well enough to participate with the online instruction, simply email the teacher and let them know. Teacher emails are listed in PowerSchool and on our website. If the teacher forgets to schedule the meeting, simply email the teacher and let them know. They will get it corrected for the following day. https://www.westada.org/site/Default.aspx?PageType=1&SiteID=43&ChannelID=354&DirectoryType=6.
Scenario 2: My student feels fine, is not showing any symptoms of illness, but I believe they were exposed to a COVID positive individual at home or in the community. What do I do?
Use this Quarantine Guide to determine if your student has been exposed and what type of quarantine they may need to do. https://www.westada.org/Page/84985.
In short, a student is considered "exposed" when they have been closer than 6ft of a COVID positive individual for a cumulative of 15 minutes.
If your student was either vaccinated or wearing a mask and is NOT showing any signs of illness, they should qualify for the Quarantine Release Program (QRP) and may come to school, but must wear a mask for 10 days (even if they have a mask opt out). This is assuming they never develop symptoms.
If your student is not vaccinated or was not wearing a mask when exposed to the COVID positive individual, they will need to quarantine at home for 10 days. You will need to notify the school 208-350-4130. Your student will be coded "ILL" in PowerSchool. This code alerts teachers that they need to provide synchronous instruction and will create a meeting in TEAMs for your student during their class period. Click Here to See the HMS Bell Schedule. Your student should log on to their meeting within 5 minutes of the start of the class period.
*If your student is not well enough to participate with the online instruction, simply email the teacher and let them know. Teacher emails are listed in PowerSchool and on our website. If the teacher forgets to schedule the meeting, simply email the teacher and let them know. They will get it corrected for the following day.
* The scenarios above relate to illness and exposures that originated outside of school. At school we follow a similar process, but code exposures differently in PowerSchool so that we can track whether the exposure happened at school or in the community. If a student is exposed at school and must quarantine at home, they are coded "ISO" in PowerSchool. This code prompts the teacher to schedule a TEAMs meeting for synchronous instruction.
* Student absences marked as "ILL" or "ISO" will not count against the student. (i.e They will not have to attend summer school due to excessive absences, etc.)
Still have questions? Give us a call 208-350-4130. We're here to help!
