My dog Maverick gets the spoils from the trapline and from rabbit butchering says. Beaver tail is definitely a favorite of his. This is from the last beaver I trapped this season, showed in the second picture.
I haven’t gotten to make something at my forge in over a year, but I’m getting back into it now and can’t wait to make some blacksmith content! This is a small trapping drag I made. It was a fun quick project, and a good way to shake off the rust on one of the first skills I learned. Next I’m making a tomahawk for a friend to take on his horseback journeys.
Well, never thought this would happen. Thank you!

No more modern light after 6:00pm for me.
Well, I probably won’t stick with that but I’m enjoying these candles I made. Some friends gave me a pound of beeswax from their hives a while back, so my wife and I made candles tonight. Surprisingly, 2 beeswax candles lights up a whole room enough to read a book. They burn bright, smokeless, and make the house smell like honey. I need bees.

Hand drill fire practice! I found a great combination here; horseweed spindle on a clematis hearth board. I’m able to easily (relatively speaking) bust a coal multiple times in a row in under a minute each with this set. Have you ever made friction fire?
The pad that the ember is sitting on is woven bitterbrush bark. People call it cliff rose in the southwest. Works great as an ember pad, as long as you transfer the ember quickly, or else the pad becomes the tinder!

There’s lots of people stealing my content and making fake pages on Facebook and YouTube, so be sure to use my link tree to get to the right ones. I just submitted a copyright violation form for some of these accounts. Hopefully Meta takes care of them quickly.

How I carve spoons using fire!
This is the mushroom that burns for hours. Horse hoof fungus (fomes fomentarius) is found on birch trees, and traditionally used to transport fire across great distances. By lighting one small corner of the woody mushroom, it can smolder like an incense cone for several hours, slowly turning into ash. It has a very interesting smell as it burns, and works to keep away mosquitos. I keep a few small pieces in my haversack, as it is a great fuel extender for fire starting. I can light a small piece with a butane lighter, and use the smoldering mushroom to start a campfire in damp conditions to save lighter fuel.
Cattail berry basket I made last month! It’s been great for collecting chokecherries , Oregon grape, and hawthorn berries this fall. I had a great instructor help me make this one. I need to practice this skill a bit more.
New YouTube video up! Link in my bio. Learn how I raise rabbits in a closed loop system in my backyard!

Who knows what this is?
Time to make elderberry wine!
Picking food and medicine mushrooms.
Lots of delicious lobster mushrooms in North Idaho right now. What started as a huckleberry foray became a mushroom hunt as the huckleberries have been stripped by commercial pickers more severely than any year I’ve seen in this area. Fortunately lobster mushrooms were out in abundance, as well as some medicinal reishi mushrooms. I’ve got a video coming out tomorrow morning on TikTok about the lobsters!
I’m working on tanning a few dozen rabbit hides. Trying to have enough tanned to make some winter clothing. I prefer bark tanning instead of brain tanning rabbit because the skin is so thin, and bark tanning adds some toughness to it. It also does a great job at setting the fur so it doesn’t slip as much over time. This one was tanned with silver maple and black willow bark, and softened with a bit of pine salve I made but any plant or animal fat can be used to soften bark tanned hides.
I help manage a regenerative community garden. Production is in full swing right now!
