๐ PASTA PARTY CAMP โ DAY 3! ๐ฎ๐น
What a delicious and educational day in The Kidz Kitchen! Today our Junior Chefs traveled to Northern Italy as we made pillowy potato gnocchi, Caprese skewers with balsamic reduction, and a simple homemade tomato sauce from scratch. โค๏ธ๐ค๐
Our chefs were introduced to several kitchen tools they had never used before, including a kitchen scale, potato ricer, and gnocchi board. They learned how each tool plays an important role in creating the perfect gnocchi!
We weighed our ingredients, riced tender potatoes, and worked together to create a soft potato dough. Then came the fun partโrolling, cutting, and shaping our gnocchi into those classic little ridges that help hold onto all that delicious sauce. ๐
We also talked about where gnocchi comes from in Italy and why potatoes became especially popular in the cooler, mountainous regions of Northern Italy, where the climate is well suited for growing them. ๐ฎ๐น
For a beautiful side, our chefs assembled Caprese skewers with tomatoes, fresh basil, and mozzarellaโthe colors of the Italian flag! ๐ฎ๐น We made a balsamic reduction by gently boiling balsamic vinegar until it transformed into a thick, sweet-tangy syrup to drizzle over our skewers.
And of course, we couldn't have gnocchi without sauce! Our chefs made a super-simple homemade tomato sauce completely from scratch, learning how a few fresh ingredients can come together to create something delicious.
Today was about so much more than cooking. Our Junior Chefs practiced measuring, following directions, kitchen vocabulary, using new equipment, teamwork, and building confidence with unfamiliar tools and techniques.
What a great day of learning, cooking, and exploring Italy in The Kidz Kitchen!
