What does a co-parenting coach actually do?

A client answered it better than I ever have. She wrote that I offer guidance without ever feeling authoritative or prescriptive.

That is the whole job. We make the stuck thing smaller. We rehearse the hard conversation before you have it. We build structures that hold when goodwill runs out. And we do not hand you the answer, because people keep the decisions they made themselves.

You do not need a crisis to call. If you have had the same argument three times and it ends the same way every time, that is enough.

When kids go quiet about a divorce, it's rarely because they have nothing to say — it's because they don't have a way in yet. A good book gives them one.

In this video I share the three I recommend most, by age. The important part is what you do with it: read it yourself first, leave it where they'll find it, and say nothing. When they bring it back to you, the conversation is theirs — and they'll let you have a lot more of it.

Am I going to be okay? It is the question that keeps more people frozen than any other, and it is not really about money. It is about safety.

Here is the honest answer: you can find out. Three lists start everything. What comes in. What goes out. What exists. You cannot make one good decision about money you have not seen.

And if your spouse has always handled the finances, you are not behind because you are not capable. Catching up is work, not talent.

Working on the marriage is always the first choice. Understanding your money is wise either way.

When you understand the way forward, you can put aside the fear and take steps to do better for yourself. You know who he is, believe it, and decide how to proceed.

A big reason people end up staying married, even though they want to be divorced is fear. They are scared of who their spouse might become: he might be a bully, he might get violent, he might turn the kids against you, he might steal money from your accounts. High-conflict divorce advice: wait 24 hours before you reply.

Your ex sends the message. Before you’ve finished reading it, your jaw is tight and your hand is already on the phone.

That’s not a character flaw. That’s your nervous system registering a threat before your mind can process it.

So don’t answer from there. There are very few real emergencies in divorce.

Wait 24 hours. Let your body settle. Then write something neutral, boring and strategic, and ask yourself whether you’d be comfortable with a judge reading it out loud.

Who do you want to be on the other side of this divorce? Practice being that person now. It serves you and your children.
