Am I going to be okay? It is the question that keeps more people frozen than any other, and it is not really about money. It is about safety.

Here is the honest answer: you can find out. Three lists start everything. What comes in. What goes out. What exists. You cannot make one good decision about money you have not seen.

And if your spouse has always handled the finances, you are not behind because you are not capable. Catching up is work, not talent.

Working on the marriage is always the first choice. Understanding your money is wise either way.

When you understand the way forward, you can put aside the fear and take steps to do better for yourself. You know who he is, believe it, and decide how to proceed.

A big reason people end up staying married, even though they want to be divorced is fear. They are scared of who their spouse might become: he might be a bully, he might get violent, he might turn the kids against you, he might steal money from your accounts. Divorce Coach, Cherie Morris of Dear Divorce Coach has some words of wisdom for you if you are in this situation. Thank you, Cherie! Article link is in comments section of this post.

High-conflict divorce advice: wait 24 hours before you reply.

Your ex sends the message. Before you’ve finished reading it, your jaw is tight and your hand is already on the phone.

That’s not a character flaw. That’s your nervous system registering a threat before your mind can process it.

So don’t answer from there. There are very few real emergencies in divorce.

Wait 24 hours. Let your body settle. Then write something neutral, boring and strategic, and ask yourself whether you’d be comfortable with a judge reading it out loud.

Who do you want to be on the other side of this divorce? Practice being that person now. It serves you and your children.

"Do we tell them together? How much do they need to know? And how do I answer 'why'?"

If you're staring down the conversation where you tell your kids you're divorcing, you are not alone — and there's a way to do it that protects them.

This week on the blog: how to tell your children by age, the three things every child needs to hear, and the one thing that matters more than any script (hint: it's not the divorce that harms children — it's the conflict).

People 50+ are the fastest-growing group getting divorced — and almost none of them decide on a whim. Most spend years in the in-between: not really in the marriage, not ready to leave. The fastest-growing group getting divorced? It’s not who you think. It’s people 50 and up — many married for decades. 📈
And almost none of them are doing it on a whim. Most have spent years in the in-between: not really in the marriage, not ready to leave.
If that’s you, here’s what I tell my clients:

🔹 You don’t have to decide today — you have to get clear
🔹 Separate a hard season from a real mismatch
🔹 Look at the finances honestly
🔹 Make the decision on purpose, not out of fear

You’re not too old to want a life that fits you. 💛
