Today I adopted a human...
"It broke my heart to see him so alone and confused. I suddenly saw his watery eyes as he looked into mine. So I barked with all my might and went after him, the following from house to house. Finally, I got close enough to touch his hand with my nose. The man smiled and I felt his cold heart begin to warm.
I moved closer to his face and felt his tears start to flow. I looked at him and he replied with a beautiful smile. I jumped into his lap excitedly, promising that I would be fine, that I would love him forever, and that I would never leave him. How lucky that he passed by where I was and that we could meet like that. I felt lucky too.
So many people have been there, but only he, only he, looked at me. I'm glad he made a choice and that I was able to save his life.

Last kiss: I'll never forget the day my mom called me in a panic "Janna, you've got to convince your daddy to get rid of that horse, it's gonna kill him!". Major (AKA "Major Deal" as mama named him) was a young and vicious stallion when dad bought him. He "couldn't be broke". The men who owned him previously had used a technique to break horses that involved beatings and tying his head tightly between two posts where they left him standing without food or water for 4 weeks. Major stood strong. When dad brought him home, he barreled through five strands of fence within minutes of arriving and he'd Bite and strike at anyone within distance. My dad never broke him.... he earned his heart. Every single day, for hours and hours dad, worked to earn that abused horse's trust. Love won and after two full years, Major allowed my dad to ride him. When dad would go out, Major would kiss him on the head over and over. They had a bond that only horse people could ever understand. It seemed only fitting to let Major say goodbye. This is Major's last kiss.

This year we celebrate 55 years of Golden Grads from MIHS! It is my understanding there is a mini celebration to be held at the Roanoke on Tuesday, September 6th at 5pm. While it is short notice the local alumni are starting to get the invitations out. Hoping to see you there.

Sue Bird, Nancy Green, Pat Hively ('62), Jim Johnston ('58) and his wife, Diane Ranta ('59), Laurie Roberts Lehman, Marjorie Davis Wallace, Joy Johnston Storgaard and Linda Nachiem were there for the most recent get together at the Roanoke Inn on September 4th. We all sat around visiting until dusk. What a great one for the memory books. Thank you, Pat for bringing those beautiful old school pictures. They were priceless!

Welcome everyone to our page. "Golden Grads" on Mercer Island, who went to school on Mercer Island and would like to reconnect with other past classmates from all of those years ago. Generally, it will be people who have been out of high school for 50 years or more. We meet here the first Friday in September and you can nearly always count on good weather. We generally mingle out in the back yard on the lawn and pass the gentle twilight hours stirring up the memories and find out what everyone is doing in these Golden Years. Hope you will join us here and share photos and memories on this page.
