Something I keep seeing:

Smart, experienced people in their 40s, 50s and 60s getting talked into courses, "opportunities," AI tools and subscriptions they didn't need.

Not because they aren't sharp. Because nobody slowed them down.

So I started a small online room for exactly that.

Got a text saying your package is "on hold" and you owe a $1.99 redelivery fee?

Don't tap the link.

These fake delivery texts are everywhere right now, and they look real. Here's the 30-second check:

1. Look at the sender. Real carriers don't text you from a random 10-digit number or an email address.
2. Look at the link. A look-alike address with extra words stuck on (like "usps-redelivery-help") is not the real carrier site. If you have to squint, it's fake.
3. Go around the text. Open the store's app or type the carrier's website yourself and enter your tracking number there.
4. Never enter card details to "release" a package. The small fee is the bait. Your card number is the catch.
5. Forward the text to 7726 (that spells SPAM) to report it to your carrier, then delete it.

The scammers count on you being busy. Five seconds of slowing down beats five hours on the phone with your bank.

Before you start any "free trial," do one thing first.

Not after you sign up. Before.

Here's the 2-minute check I use:

1. Look at the billing or account page. Is cancelling one click, or a phone call and a form?
2. Find the renewal price, not just the intro price. "$1 for 7 days" can turn into $49 a month.
3. Set a phone reminder for 2 days before the trial ends.
4. Search the product name plus "cancel" or "refund." Other people's experience tells you more than the sales page does.

If you can't figure out how to cancel in two minutes, that's a preview of how hard they'll make it later.

It's a small habit, but it saves real money, especially with AI tools, which seem to launch a new trial every week.

If you’re exploring ways to earn online, start with something you know well, enjoy doing and have real experience helping others with.

OpenAI’s September 16 research examined more than 1.5 million work-related ChatGPT messages. Some workers returned to tasks outside their usual roles, including customer communication and marketing. It studied usage patterns, not earnings gains or outcomes specifically for adults over 40.

Here’s a small DSSA experiment:
• Choose an audience you understand
• Pick one problem you’ve solved repeatedly
• Ask AI to help draft a checklist or a simple service offer
• Use your experience to check every claim and improve the advice
• Ask three potential buyers whether it solves a problem they would pay to fix

You can learn AI one useful task at a time. Staying current can begin with applying your existing judgment to a new tool.

Shopping for health coverage for yourself or helping a parent? Slow down before clicking the first search result.

The FTC warns that scammers and dishonest businesses can pay for top placement and use official-looking logos and lookalike web addresses. Following an ad can lead to a misleading plan or expose your information to medical identity theft.

A simple safety check:
• Look for “Ad” or “Sponsored” labels
• Type Medicare.gov or HealthCare.gov directly into your browser’s address bar
• Take time to compare coverage and costs before sharing information

A high search position doesn’t verify who’s behind a website. Check the destination first.
