Good morning HSA UC Merced, my name is Ashley Her. I am a Student Pharmacist currently in my second year at UCSF School of Pharmacy.

I am asking for Hmong undergraduate college students in CA for help on a current project! With the help of my professors at UCSF, I would like to utilize my position to encourage contraceptive/birth control awareness in the Hmong College community. To start, I have created a simple survey to determine what students find interesting and what they would like more information on (regarding birth control). This survey will help guide an informational/webinar session for Hmong college students to partake in at a later time.

The Hmong Student Association was established at UC Merced in 2006, one year after the university was founded. As many multicultural organizations were being initiated, HSA became one of them. Since UC Merced was located in the central valley, the population of Hmong students attending was a substantial amount. The establishment of HSA gave these students an environment to feel welcomed by having an organization dedicated to their ethnicity and culture. Not only has HSA been a welcoming environment for those whose ethnicities are Hmong, but also for those that have been interested in learning more about the Hmong culture and looking for a group with open arms. Overall, the Hmong Student Association continues to welcome all individuals no matter what background to be a part of the tsev neeg (family).

The Big & Little Program is designed for our members to create a unique bond with each other. Rather than a mentor and mentee relationship which it may be mistaken for, the relationships between bigs and littles are more special as each individual is able to rely on each other and no boundaries need to be formed. It allows each individual to be vulnerable to each other and have a peep by their side throughout their journey in college and life. If you have any questions please contact our Activities Director, Sunshine Xiong ([email protected]).

01/21/2022

Hello, we are sad to announce the cancellation of our Educational Conference. After much discussion with our officer board and communication with our school’s administration, we have ultimately decided to make the tough decision of cancelling our conference. As COVID cases are rising again, we do not want to expose our members and the community of that risk. We would like to extend our thanks for all individuals who have supported in sharing our event to your communities. We truly appreciate all the effort.

As the Educational Conference is one of our main highlights that our organization have always enjoyed hosting annually, it is truly unfortunate and disappointing for us to cancel the event this year. However, we are hopeful that we will be able to host an in-person Educational Conference in the next academic year.

Until then, we thank you for taking the time to read.

12/07/2021
