Physics Ph.D. student Md Mehdi Masud has been named an American Physical Society (APS Physics) Student Ambassador.

A new study by UC Merced Life and Environmental Sciences Professor Xuan Zhang and colleagues reveals a way to more reliably predict what's going on in the atmosphere. She and her colleagues discovered a new mechanism by which isoprene — the hydrocarbon emitted by plants — is photochemically oxidized, producing ozone and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), two essential ingredients in smoggy air pollution.

He is a senior program officer at the Gates Foundation, where he focuses on advancing educational equity and economic mobility in the United States. UC Merced’s Brandi McKuin found that covering California's water canals with solar panels could reduce evaporation by as much as 82 percent, saving about 63 billion gallons of water a year. The Turlock Irrigation District is now piloting a first-in-the-nation project to test the idea.

Duval Johnson ('14, '18) has been selected as the keynote speaker for the Graduate Division Commencement Ceremony.

The alumnus leads the Applied Tribology Lab at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena and has been instrumental in various missions, including the Mars Perseverance rover. While at UC Merced, he earned bachelor's and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering, and was also part of the Fundamental Tribology Lab.

Golden Valley High School’s Band Boosters club provides support to the young musicians and color guard. The club meets regularly in the school’s cafeteria and hosts fund-raising bingo games. Club member Sam Yniguez, UC Merced’s director of public relations, calls out the letters and numbers.

“Home for the Holidays” is a project hosted by the UC Merced Community Engagement Center (CEC) that provides gifts for families who might otherwise be struggling.

Often, departments will get together to shop for a family, picking up the items they need. Participants have until 4 PM Dec. 20 to return the wrapped gifts either to the engagement center or the Downtown Campus Center.

Climate adaptation specialist Tapan Pathak has helped develop an online tool to aid farmers in making decisions in real-time. Pathak worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, California Climate Hub, UC Cooperative Extension and UC Agriculture & Natural Resources' Informatics and Geographic Information Systems (or UC ANR IGIS) to launch CalAgroClimate, a free resource for farmers.
