UC Merced’s Brandi McKuin found that covering California's water canals with solar panels could reduce evaporation by as much as 82 percent, saving about 63 billion gallons of water a year. The Turlock Irrigation District is now piloting a first-in-the-nation project to test the idea.

The dairy industry is one of the main sources of methane in California, making up 50% of the state’s methane emissions. UC Merced researchers show that adding even a small amount of biochar to a dairy’s manure-composting process reduces methane emissions by 84%.

In 2021, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that the state will support the university’s new medical education building. The Health, Behavioral Sciences and Medical Education Building will support a B.S.-to-M.D. joint degree program with UCSF-Fresno, starting in 2023, along with public health and psychological sciences faculty and students.

Inspired by nature, Artist Bill Poulson first conceived of The Four Seasons of Yosemite in 1986. After closing his stained-glass studio in Maui, he arrived in Yosemite National Park that September and embarked on drawing numerous scenes over the course of a few weeks. These drawings informed his finalized sketches for each of the four murals located in the UC Merced Library.

Have you visited the temporary labyrinth on campus yet?
A temporary labyrinth has taken shape on the UC Merced campus. The labyrinth, which is an ancient pattern people walk to reflect, was built by master designer Lars Howlett. Marked by spray paint now, once the final design is determined, the path will be delineated by river rocks and decomposed granite.

Lillie Pennington has been awarded a Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine for the 2022-2023 academic year. She is one of 38 students nationally who each receive $28,000 in funding for one year to write and defend their dissertations.
