We are proud to celebrate Isabel “Izzy” Hernandez, second-year CUW SLP graduate student and recipient of the Wisconsin Speech-Language-Hearing Association (WSHA) Foundation Judith H. and David J. Ward Scholarship!

Izzy’s passion for serving students in public schools and experiences in interprofessional practice came through clearly in her scholarship application- and we cannot think of a better future SLP to celebrate.

Way to represent CUW SLP, Izzy. We’ll be cheering when you receive your award at the WSHA Convention in February! 💙💛

CUW SLP NSSLHA Walk for Apraxia- Join us!

CUW SLP has a virtual Walk for Apraxia team and is walking together on campus on Saturday morning 11/7/26.

It’s both a community connection event for CUW SLP, and a fundraising service event for the Apraxia Kids organization. CUW SLP Faculty, SLP and CSD students, colleagues, friends, and family are welcome, but it is on campus, so no pets. We walk the loop as many times as you want.

Global Learning | CUW SLP in Belize
Learning changes when the classroom gets bigger.
This summer, CUW students participated in a service-focused global education experience in Belize alongside students from SLP, OT, PT, and Special Education.
The experience combined interprofessional collaboration, clinical and educational service, cultural learning, and structured reflection.

The goal was not simply to practice professional skills somewhere new. It was to consider how culture, context, resources, relationships, and professional roles shape the way we serve.

Clinical Reasoning in Pediatric Feeding

Clinical reasoning starts with the person in front of you.

In Pediatric Feeding Disorders, CUW students worked through case studies requiring them to consider both positioning modifications and food chaining.

Starting with an individual’s preferred food, students developed thoughtful food chains while also considering how postural needs could affect feeding.
It is one more example of moving from classroom content to individualized clinical decision-making.

We are pleased to welcome Jen Eggert, MS, CCC-SLP, C/NDT, to the CUW SLP clinical education team this fall.

Jen brings nearly 30 years of experience in speech-language pathology, with deep expertise in pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders and nearly two decades of teaching and mentoring future SLPs.
Her leadership has included serving as WSHA President, completing the ASHA Leadership Development Academy, collaborating on statewide feeding and swallowing resources, and receiving the 2026 Feeding Matters Systems Innovator Award.
We are fortunate to have that level of knowledge and experience supporting CUW students!

Alumni Spotlight | Kayla Hensley ’23

SLP leadership can extend far beyond the treatment room.
Kayla Hensley, a member of CUW’s Yellow Cohort, now serves as a Regional Vice President of Operations with Continuum Therapy Partners, supporting therapy services for older adults.

Her work brings together clinical practice, operations, advocacy, mentorship, and interprofessional leadership - including helping connect students with strong clinical educators.
For Kayla, communication and swallowing remain fundamentally connected to independence, dignity, and quality of life.
