How is artificial intelligence changing the justice system? What does it take to identify a missing person years later? How can communities better respond to violence against women?

Concordia University Wisconsin's Justice & Public Policy program will take up these questions at Justice Summit 2026 on Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center on our Mequon campus.

Students, faculty, justice professionals, and community members will hear from panelists representing the Milwaukee Police Department, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office, and CUW. Justice & Public Policy graduates will also share how they prepared for careers of service during a Lunch & Learn.

"Our purpose is straightforward: to encourage honest conversation, strengthen mutual understanding and build trust between institutions and the communities they serve," said Dr. Ken Harris, chair of the Department of Justice & Public Policy.

The summit is free and open to the community. Registration is required.

Compassion is a professional skill, and CUW is teaching it.

Launched in 2021, our Compassion Care Certificate gives students in any major coursework in compassionate caregiving, social and emotional learning, and supporting people affected by trauma. Students then put that learning into practice as handlers for our campus comfort dogs, Runner and Sage, serving schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and churches.

Education students make up the largest group, but the certificate also draws future counselors, social workers, athletic trainers, and physical and occupational therapists. Gina Cuccio ’20 knew as a child that journalism was her calling. Today she lives it out as a producer for Newsradio 620 WTMJ, where every day looks a little different depending on the news.

While Wisconsin's Midday News is on air, Gina manages guests, audio levels, the livestream, and the clock. After the show, she turns segments into podcasts and video for social media. Just three months into the role, she helped the WTMJ team cover the 2024 presidential election.

Her foundation took shape here at Concordia. Gina served as student editor of The Beacon, our student news publication, interned at WISN 12 News, and learned from faculty who believed in her. "The journalism courses at Concordia and the professors who taught those classes gave me the knowledge and confidence I needed to succeed," she said.

Today, Gina gives back as a member of our Communications Alumni Advisory Board, helping guide the Falcons who will follow in her footsteps. We're proud to see her serving her community by keeping it informed.

Concordia University Wisconsin welcomed veteran broadcaster and former ESPN SportsCenter host Sage Steele to Todd Wehr Auditorium as the keynote speaker for the annual Liberty, Faith and Economics Summit.

Steele shared her career journey, from 16 years at ESPN to stepping out to work for herself, and what it has meant to choose the harder right over the easier wrong. Her story was a reminder that conviction often comes with a cost, and that it is worth it.

Thank you to Sage Steele, to the Concordia Free Enterprise Center for hosting, to Young America's Foundation for sponsoring the keynote, and to the students, faculty, alumni, and community members who joined us.

Meet the students who help make Concordia's residence halls feel like home.

This year's resident assistants are future nurses, teachers, physical therapists, church workers, engineers, and more. They answer the late-night lockout calls, plan hall activities, and get to know the people living down the hall. They also come with some great stories. One has been skydiving twice. One has been bitten by a monkey. One once had seven frogs in his pocket.

Justice Summit 2026 comes to Concordia University Wisconsin on Wednesday, October 14.

Led by Dr. Kenneth Harris, chair of our Justice and Public Policy department and a retired police lieutenant, the summit brings leaders from law enforcement, prosecution, courts, corrections, and the media to campus for honest, unscripted conversation with students, faculty, staff, and the community.

Panels will address artificial intelligence in the justice system, violence against women, and missing and unidentified persons, followed by a closing conversation on the future of justice leadership. Attendees will also hear from JPP graduates who are living out their calling in the field.

Registration and a light breakfast begin at 8:15 a.m. The program begins at 9 a.m.

A toy that lights up at the push of a button seems simple. For some children, pushing that button is the hard part.

On Oct. 24, CUW engineering students will gather in the Collaboratorium for Concordia's first adaptive toy build day, modeled after Inclusive Play: Toys for All, a collaboration between Penfield Children's Center and Marquette University. Their goal is to adapt as many as 120 toys so children with physical or developmental disabilities can play independently.

Led by student organizers Lucas Kearney and Evan Delvaux, the event puts classroom learning to work in service of others. As Dr. Subha Kumpaty shared, "Even if one child has benefited, it's worth it."
