Last night, we faced a difficult but important decision about the future of Mentor Schools.

There were only two realistic options:
Option 1: Place a 3.5-mill levy on the ballot while making more than $10 million in budget reductions over the next two years.

Option 2: Don't ask the community for a levy, make $14.4 million in cuts over the next two years, and still need to ask for a levy in the years ahead.

I voted YES to place the levy on the ballot because I believe our community deserves the opportunity to decide the future of our schools.

Had the board chosen NOT to place the levy on the ballot, the district would have been forced to implement the deeper $14.4 million in cuts without the community ever having the opportunity to vote. By placing the levy on the ballot, the decision about our schools now belongs to the voters.

This isn't about avoiding difficult decisions—we're already making significant reductions. It's about preventing cuts that would fundamentally change the educational experience for our students.
Without local funding, the impacts would be felt throughout the district:
-Larger class sizes
-Fewer teachers and staff
-Reduced transportation services
-Fewer school resource officers and mental health professionals
-Cuts to career and technical education, music, art, STEM, and other electives
-Reductions to extracurricular activities, clubs, and athletics
-Less support for the day-to-day operations that keep our schools safe and effective

The reality is that state funding has not kept pace with inflation. As costs continue to rise, communities across Ohio are increasingly being asked to decide whether to invest locally or accept deeper cuts.
The board voted 4–1 to place the levy before the voters. I supported that decision because I believe Mentor residents—not the school board alone—should have a voice in determining what our schools, and ultimately our community, will look like for years to come.

No one enjoys asking taxpayers for additional support. But I believe giving our community the choice is the responsible thing to do.

This November, you will have that choice.
