Student Adam Bayerl's interest in sustainability motivated him to work as a groundskeeper this summer - where he designed the landscape of & helped plant over 1,500 plants around campus. His role was inspired by what he learned in his molecular cell biology course, taught by Assistant Professor Cassondra Vernier. 🧬

🪴 In class, Adam analyzed the gut microbiomes of bees, and Vernier suggested he could use the same technique to analyze soil microbiomes around campus. He learned that native plants improve soil in part by helping microorganisms thrive.

🌿 Plants native to prairie biomes – which once covered parts of western Wisconsin – are known for their ability to trap carbon and filter environmental pollutants. Ideally, once established, these plants will require less water and labor to maintain.

We’re doing more to build & strengthen Wisconsin’s workforce.

Today at UW-Milwaukee, the Universities of Wisconsin are highlighting a promise to Wisconsinites: build Wisconsin's workforce and next generation of businesses.

At UW-Stout Polytechnic, we continue to hear from employers that they need workers who are highly skilled and ready to lead emerging tech like 3D concrete & metal printing, advanced computing, and applied industrial AI. Preparing our students for this will help advance the construction, supply chain, next-gen agriculture, and automation industries.

We’re in the perfect position to provide the education needed to succeed in the global economy, given the nuanced ethical environmental considerations that accompany innovation. With the state’s investment, concerning 3D construction, we’ll expand our ability to re-skill workers so they’ll thrive in the high-tech workforce.

We’ll develop an innovations lab that will equip our campus to impact industry practice, business collaborations, and project-based learning surrounding industrial AI use. Lastly, our mission to financially relieve reentry and adult degree-seeking students would realized by the state’s investment in the UW.

Wisconsin needs more health care professionals, especially in rural communities, and the only way to get there is education.

Today at UW-LaCrosse, Universities of Wisconsin are highlighting their promise to improve access to healthcare across Wisconsin and add 35,000 healthcare professionals over the next 10 years.

With the state’s investment, UW-Stout Polytechnic will pursue biomedical product and packaging design programming, bringing together disciplines across campus to engage in collaboration with medical device manufacturers, service providers, universities, and other state partners to accelerate development of groundbreaking, sustainable medical devices and packaging and the high-skilled employees to meet workforce needs.

The shortage of mental health counselors in our state is due to lack of access to licensure, since clinical placements cause a break in concurrent employment during students' program and force them to commute long distances from their rural homes. To relieve financial barriers and burdens from those pursuing education to serve our communities, funds will be allocated to mental health & counseling degree students traveling to their clinical placements, a requirement for state licensure.

University students from across the country traveled to our quaint city of Menomonie to apply an interdisciplinary research approach to study the Red Cedar Watershed this summer. 🐟

UW-Stout LAKES REU program prepares students with the analytical skills needed to address complex environmental issues that have real impact in our community when it comes to new science & policy.

Areas of research include the impact of urban streams on watersheds, economic connections to the environment, local perspectives on data centers, and the public's feelings and behaviors toward sustainability. Groups are collaborating across disciplines in environmental science, biology, anthropology and psychology as they seek to develop sustainable solutions with community and government partners, local citizens and policymakers.

We're headed to the moon, folks. 🌚 Engineering students have been working in collaboration with Sierra Space using a lunar dust testing chamber to simulate how moon dust interacts with a prototype coating on rover headlights designed to prevent dust from sticking. (The coating was successful, by the way!)

Thanks to the mentorship of alumnus Todd Treichel, Ph.D., a principal manufacturing engineer at Sierra Space, our students have had a stellar experience learning from an industry expert who teaches with purpose & doesn't overstep.

This work came at a time of revived public interest in space travel, thanks in large part to NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's successful Artemis II lunar flyby in April. Sierra Space has been actively developing In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) technologies, including developing a system to extract oxygen from lunar soil, as well as efforts to design inflatable space habitats and support activities for an upcoming Moon base.

Ma, we made it! UW-Stout Polytechnic has been ranked in the top 50 Best Value Public Universities, based on our yearly cost, median earnings for graduates and graduation rates.

Recently, various programs at Stout have been recognized for their value, too:
🏅 Gold designation as a Military Friendly® School for 2026-27
🛎️ Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management program as No. 9 among the Best Hospitality and Hotel Management Programs in the World
🎮 Game design programs were ranked No. 6 in the Midwest and No. 17 among all U.S. public universities
💻 Cybersecurity program ranked No. 14 among the Top 25 programs in the U.S.

And the cherry on top is that the average starting salary for bachelor degree grads has been the highest among universities in western Wisconsin for the past seven years! 🍒

Hey, what's that in the sky? ☄️ It's an object shed from a spacecraft, and it's re-entering our atmosphere. And it’s headed for someone’s business or backyard...

Ideally, when a piece of debris in orbit drifts down toward Earth’s upper atmosphere, it burns up and the object melts. Here’s the issue: carbon fiber is just too tough. It’s a strong and lightweight material used for many parts of a space craft, but it burns away unpredictably, as the carbon fiber acts a shield to the extreme heat during reentry.

Student researcher Reese Hufnagel and chemistry professor Matthew Ray, as a team, have been researching how to make the materials smarter, keeping them strong…until we need them to weaken during reentry.
