Meet Audrey Arnoldussen, a Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management student at UW–Stout, who spent this past summer working as a Front of House Lead at Red Pine Private Camp for Girls. In this role, she managed the dining area, helped supervise kitchen staff when needed, ensured each meal service ran smoothly, and oversaw setup and cleanup, so the dining room was ready for campers and staff throughout the day. Her favorite part of working at a summer camp was seeing all the fun activities and events unfold over the summer and getting to be in the dining room, one of the few places where the whole camp comes together at once. Her advice for fellow students is to do as many internships as possible, because experiencing different areas of hospitality is key to discovering what you truly enjoy and where you want to grow your career.

Meet Cece Wallace, a junior in the Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management major at UW–Stout, who spent the summer as the Big Pelican Cruise Coordinator at Fair Hills Resort in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. In this role, Cece planned and coordinated themed boat party cruises on the Big Pelican, overseeing event logistics and guest experiences from boarding to final dock. She also supported a wide range of on-property events, including celebrations of life, corporate gatherings, and weddings as part of the event's staff team. In addition, Cece worked in multiple guest-facing roles as a bartender, barista, and front desk specialist, gaining a 360-degree view of resort operations and guest service. She shares this advice for fellow students: you learn the most by doing, no matter how many classes you take, it doesn’t compare to real-world experience, so find an internship where you can explore different departments and discover what you like, dislike, and what you’re good at.
