Peninsula School is an Independent progressive school in Menlo Park, California. Together they became very educated in the works of the progressive movement.

Peninsula School is a progressive school created by an ambitious group of parents from the Stanford faculty and spouses, local high school leadership, and those interested in moving education of children away from the test heavy methods of the time. They were lead by Josephine Duveneck, and successfully launched the school, which has lasted with its focus on child-centered, experiential learning w

This spring, Peninsula students did what Peninsula students do - they went camping! 🏕️

From Oak students who experienced an overnight on campus with a dance party, s’mores over a campfire and 4am wake-up - to middle schoolers who planned every meal, packed every bag, and negotiated who shared which tent, our camping program wrapped up another unforgettable year.

Our fall and spring camping trips are some of the most formative experiences in a Peninsula student’s year. As new skills are developed, kids discover they’re more capable than they imagined. Friendships deepen and confidence builds.

This is progressive education at its best. Our camping traditions have lasting impacts on children’s lives, building resilience and problem-solving skills they draw on for years. What a wonderful way to bookend the school year.🌲☀️

Amidst all the excitement that the end of the school year brings, we’re also thinking about all the new families who will be joining us this fall.

To our newest students and families: welcome!

Soon, our wonderful celebrations and opportunities for growth, learning, and connections will become part of your family’s story, too.

Here’s to new friendships, new adventures, and a beautiful school year ahead. 💛

To our incredible Peninsula School families: the love you’ve shown to staff and teachers through the flower and seed bar, happy hour kits, and so many other thoughtful gestures has filled our hearts. 💛

You remind us every single day why we do the work we do. We feel your love and send it right back to you. 🫶

Our annual Rock Concert was a HIT! 🎸🎤

Throughout the day and into the evening, our musicians took to the stage with joy and confidence, owning the spotlight as they performed songs they’ve poured themselves into all year.

Thank you to our Middle School music teacher Jonathan - none of this happens without him! And thank you to the parents and family members, alumni, and neighbors who came to cheer our kids on.

The Rock Concert has always been one of our most cherished traditions, bringing our community together, celebrating the hard work of our students, and inspiring the next generation of musicians. 🎶

Award-winning author-illustrator Nidhi Chanani recently visited Peninsula School to bring her beautiful picture books and graphic novels to life right before our eyes.

In her presentation to our youngest students, Nidhi showed us what it really takes for her to make a picture book - from meticulously mixing every color by hand, to painting on wet paper for those dreamy washes, to discovering that all illustrations are built from deceptively simple straight or curved lines. And then she proved it, bringing her character Karima - from her picture book Quiet Karima - to life on a blank page right in front of us.

Nidhi taught our students that creating a picture book is a long, beautiful process and mistakes are part of the craft. ✏️

And she reminded us that a walk through the park is a symphony if you just stop and listen. 🌳

What an inspiring day for our students and staff!

After many weeks of hard work and preparation, the 7th Grade class put on an unforgettable performance of Hamlet.

Creativity, planning, and passion helped deliver multiple performances to Peninsula students and families. Working together to bring a play to life is a powerful process for middle schoolers. It requires collaboration and negotiation from start to finish. Students designed and built sets, casted the play, and created the script, furthering their skills in reading, writing, public speaking, and critical thinking.

Bravo, 7th Grade!

How many ways to celebrate 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ days? Let us count the ways!

From stacking and sorting 100 cups, to threading and counting 100 beads for necklaces, our students in Sunshine found inspiration in counting in every corner of our classroom! 💫
