Community support helped a family start over: With interview coaching and employer connections, Barbara* secured a living-wage job.

Barbara arrived at a San Mateo family shelter holding her two-year-old daughter and one clear resolve: the violence would end with her. She had fled an abusive relationship, but she was not looking for a temporary place to land. She was looking for a way forward.

During her time at the shelter, Barbara completed a Personal Care course and secured a restraining order against her former partner. Each step was deliberate, moving her closer to safety and independence.

Happy Raksha Bandhan!

Raksha Bandhan is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates the special bond between siblings.

"Raksha" means protection, and "Bandhan" means to tie or bind. This Hindu festival, where sisters tie a Rakhi (amulet) around their brother’s wrist, celebrates the loving and protective relationship between brothers and sisters. These days, it is also celebrated among sisters, cousins, close friends and extended family.
