A good reminder to delve beyond the physical!
Following up on my last two posts... It helps in Yoga practice to use your imagination, and this image on the right, from Richard Freeman's book, The Mirror of Yoga, is an image that captures my imagination. This is what Richard (who is a genius by the way) has to say about it:
The swan represents the liberated ātman. It floats on the clear, calm lake of the enlightened mind. When the swan sleeps it rests it's head on it's heart in samādhi. The shape illustrated here is formed by the practice of mūlabandha, uddiyāna bandha, and jālandhara bandha. These bandhas unite the prāna and apāna which then interpenetrate and fully spread into this integrated shape, opening the back of the diaphragm like wings while opening the center of the heart like a buoyant sun. This integration and suspension of the in-breath and the out-breath ignites a fire under the pot of the belly, opens the vacuous, bright tube of the central channel, allowing the mind to rest in it's own radiant nature, free of conceptual coverings.”
This idea of using the imagination to feel the yogic body is something that I’ve come across a few times recently in my studies of Ta**ra.
A nice reminder that Yoga is beyond fitness, and western ideas of anatomy and physiology.
(I posted this back around 2015.. nice to see it has stood the test of time.)
