In the past, up to eleven different subspecies of margays including this Central American margay at Tierpark Berlin, have been described by scientists. More recent genetic studies suggest there may only be evidence to support three of these distinctions, but more research is needed to determine if reclassification is necessary. Margays can be found in forested regions from Northern Mexico to Uruguay and northern Argentina. Within these forests, margays are known for their impressive climbing skills. They are capable of hind-foot reversal, which allows the cats to descend from trees much like a squirrel. For many decades, thousands of individual margays were harvested for their pelts, which led to steep declines in the species’ numbers. While hunting pressure has decreased considerably following international protection, some illegal harvesting still occurs, and the margay remains threatened with extinction.
