We had a visit from the Surber Family last week! Head of School-elect Andy Surber was in town with his family for house-hunting as well as a few on-campus meetings with members of the transition committee and leadership team. The Surbers even stopped by the Italian Dinner and picked up some to-go meals in support of our 8th Grade! (Mary, Keenan GSL ’17, Logan GSL ’19, and Andy pictured below.) Looking forward to welcoming them back in July.⚓😀

To close out Women’s History Month, we wanted to pay tribute to our school’s founder, Lorena Webber Walker. In 1947 Mrs. Walker, who had previously run a kindergarten at St. Mary’s Episcopal School, approached the Rev. Dr. Charles Stuart Hale, the second rector of the newly-merged Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, to ask if she could rent space at GSL to begin operating a kindergarten here. A scholarly man himself, he agreed, and Mrs. Walker set to work. Who knew that from those humble beginnings in the Parish Hall, a thriving school would emerge and end up serving the children of Memphis for the next 75 years!

Her portrait hangs today in our Administrative Office, and our annual teaching award is named in her honor. We share a few photos here, along with the beginning of her five-page handwritten treatise on “The Purpose of Kindergarten.”

She wrote: “In this period … we have a greater opportunity than we shall ever have again … to cultivate habits of self-control, initiative, self-reliance, fair play, courtesy, sympathy, love, and protection for all living things.” Standards that still hold today!

We celebrate and remember Mrs. Walker - a great lady to whom we owe a great debt. 👏⚓♥️

Young alumni should remember this - we first started this annual hip hop performance tradition about 14 years ago, with the help of Robert Mtown Image Ward and his dance troupe!

Happy TWOSDAY! Couldn't let 2/22/22 pass without getting a photo of our GSL twins! Posting a two-for-one here... we beat the rain, but the littles did get a bit more wiggly by the end of our shoot! Eight precious sets of twins in Preschool and Lower School, plus Henry in Middle School (twin Marin is out on her 8th grade internship!)
Sending out twice the love today from GSL! ♥️♥️2️⃣✌️

We are sad to share news of the passing of Robert Jordan '81 last month. Our thoughts and prayers are with his brothers David '81 and Mark '85. Robert was a loyal alum with a big heart - we could always count on his friendly presence at our Lisa 5K races and at alumni reunions - and he will be greatly missed.

With Mark's permission, we share an excerpt from his post about Robert on Facebook last month:
"He had an unbelievably tough go of it in recent years, but he packed a lot into the good years he had. He deeply cherished the many friendships and memories he developed over decades spent on the local and international music scenes. More recently he forged a second life as a professional student working towards his PhD in applied linguistics, and he felt just as much affection for the many relationships — mentors, colleagues, and students — that he forged there. I suspect, however, that Robert was most happy, most at home on the road, biking across continents, making friendships and breaking bread with fellow travelers most of whom he hasn't encountered since, but who I like to think, on a rainy day or over a beer, will nevertheless sense his absence ... please, take a few moments to hold your loved ones tight and tell them you love them."

Middle School Art Teacher Lee Schaffler invited her sixth graders to enter Google's annual Doodle contest for students. Google's contest theme this year is taking care of yourself, and students are being asked to submit a drawing with an artist's statement about what makes them feel better or brings them joy. We share sixth grader Austin's entry and artist statement here. Such a sweet, heartfelt sentiment – pretty much makes our year! ♥️⚓🥰

"The theme to me meant what do I care about, so I drew things that represent my school: The basketball (G) represents P.E., the glasses (oo) represent students, the professor hat (g) represents teachers, the anchor (l) is GSL’s symbol, and the tape measure (e) represents Math. There are a lot of things I care about, but the thing I care about most is GSL, the best school you will ever find."
