Farm Friday: Not all pumpkins are created equal! While the more traditional carving pumpkins found around Halloween are tough to grow in the Memphis area without the use of pesticides, there are options for those who love to cook up pumpkin recipes.

This pumpkin, called the 'seminole pumpkin', is highly resistant to the squash vine borer - the biggest pest of the squash and pumpkin family - and is also resistant to powdery mildew, making it one of the best pumpkin varieties to grow in the Memphis area.

With sweet flesh that tastes like a butternut squash, it is a winner for any garden. We use it as a ground cover under our trellised tomatoes and peppers, as its vines can cover over 20 feet.

Surprise! Our parents had no idea this morning's carline would be an extra special treat. We love our families and appreciate all they do. Yep, those are tasty blueberry and chocolate muffins!

What excites you about teaching at New Hope?
I love the mission of New Hope and the sweet children and families I have met. The Urban Farm and Forest are such unique experiences and I am excited to get to enjoy them right along with students.

How do you contribute most to learning?
I love the JK ages and working with them to learn letters, sounds, and how to read. It is fun to help them learn and to “do school” and set them up for future success and learning at New Hope.

What is one lesson you want students to take away from New Hope?
I want them to know they are “fearfully and wonderfully made” by God and that He loves them very much.

Special thanks to Bellevue Baptist Church for lending some extra hands in helping horticulturist, David Vaughan, groom our Urban Forest which is just one part of our students’ outdoor learning spaces. Thank you for what you continue to contribute to this great city.

Science students have been learning the engineering design process in our first unit, and second graders build towers with toothpicks and clay in order to show there can be more than one solution to a problem. They recalled the story of “Three Little Pigs” and built houses to withstand the "big, bad wolf" in a lesson on testing and redesigning. #outsidethebox

Special thanks to a generous donation from Agape North, our students were gifted stylish 25th-year NH-branded face masks. We appreciate the generosity Agape North extends to local schools and organizations across the Bluff.

What excites you most about teaching at New Hope?
I am really looking forward to all of the hands-on learning that takes place at New Hope, particularly in the Urban Farm and Forest! There is so much we can explore about God’s world through nature.

How do you contribute most to learning?
I love creating a safe, structured, and curious classroom where students are able to learn how to be critical thinkers and problem solvers. If students have a question or even a conflict, I’m not going to give them the answer or solve the problem for them. Instead, I want to equip them with the skills to become more independent in those areas. I also highly value social, emotional learning and giving students the opportunity to learn and practice empathy and compassion.

What is one lesson you want students to take away from New Hope?
My hope and prayer is that our students became global-minded servant leaders who strive to follow Jesus in all areas of their lives.

New Teacher Highlight: Shonterria Barham – 6th Grade Teacher, ELA

What excites you most about teaching at New Hope?
We live in a world of constant change. Teaching at New Hope allows me to teach my students about Jesus and the Christian faith.

How do you contribute most to learning?
I get to cultivate an academic environment in the classroom by setting high, but not impossible expectations for all students. I push students to achieve higher standards and they will eventually get there and offer a lot of praise along the way. Some students may take a longer time than others, but all students want to be told, “You’re smart and you’re doing a good job.”

What is one lesson you want students to take away from New Hope?
Learning is essential and it unlocks doors to a world of opportunities.

What excites you about teaching at New Hope?
I get to help my teachers and be around the kids again. I can’t wait to start coaching and mentoring kids again.

How do you contribute most to learning?
Anything I teach the kids is by experience and repetition. Those are two great teachers.

What is one lesson you want our students to take away from New Hope? The only lesson that they need to know is they are loved, and they need to actively seek Christ.

New Teacher Highlight: Andrea Campbell - Music

What excites you about teaching at New Hope?
What excites me most about teaching at New Hope is the opportunity to give back to the organization that became my second home. As a New Hope Alumna, I have experienced firsthand how life can be changed by walking through these halls. I am honored to play a small role in teaching these students and sharing with them how great our God truly is.

How do you contribute most to learning?
What I contribute most to learning is teaching a subject that incorporates every other subject that students learn. Music allows students to explore Math, History, Language Arts and so much more through a creative lens.

What is one lesson you want our students to take away from New Hope?
One lesson that I want our students to take away from New Hope is the intentionality of the Father. We were all created by God for His glory. From how students perform in the classroom to how they treat their neighbors. Every moment of their lives is an opportunity to worship the Lord in spirit and in truth.

On our Urban Farm, we grow over 200 types of plants. We preserve food and teach our students how to best utilize nature to grow and nurture. From lessons in cultivating and growing their own garden to presenting sustainable food sources and recycling, students have an adventurous time at our Farm.

This year, while some students traveled and slept in, our Urban Farm interns (former New Hope students) beat the heat to water, prune, and cultivate our green space - learning lessons that will last a lifetime from Horticulturist, David Vaughan.

Special thanks to our interns: Zalia Cedeño-Avila (Hutchison School), J'oules Williams (Hutchison School), Denton Smith (St. George’s Independent School), Seth Weston (Collegiate School of Memphis), George Brandon (St. George’s Independent School), and Isaiah Lewis (St George’s Independent School).
