On the road, battling injuries, heat, and more heartache than any one team should endure, your Cougars got the win, in OT, 24-18, over Millington Central. We talked with some of the key players after tonight’s game, including Alandus King, Jaylon Jordan, Joshua White, and Raheem Vance.

Kirby Family,

We would like you to help us welcome our new Nursing/Health Sciences Instructor, Mrs. Angel DeSquare.

Mrs. DeSquare is a native Memphian and graduate of Bishop Byrne High School. She earned a BS in Biology from Xavier University of New Orleans; a BSN from Baptist Health Sciences University; and a MSN from the University of Memphis.

In addition to serving as a nurse for 18 years in a variety of positions, Mrs. DeSquare has also taught nursing and health science at the post-secondary level. She started a novel PCA program while she was at Baptist, and it was that experience which inspired her to come teach at the secondary level.

“It’s always been a calling to mentor and teach, no matter what level.” said Mrs. DeSquare. “It’s about going back and giving back…this is where it comes full circle for me.”

When asked why she chose to come teach at Kirby, Mrs. DeSquare said that she liked the diversity of the population and the opportunity for growth in the nursing program at Kirby. She wants the to show the students of Kirby what nursing truly is versus what they might see on TV.

Mrs. DeSquare is married to a husband who is also an SCS educator. They have a daughter who is a freshman at her mother’s alma mater, Xavier University. When not working, Mrs. DeSquare enjoys reading, listening to music, drinking coffee, and “just geeking out”.

Welcome to Kirby, Mrs. DeSquare! You truly are…

Kirby Family,

We would like to introduce our new Chemistry teacher, Mr. Lucas Parrish.

Mr. Parrish is originally from Waynesboro, TN, and earned a BS in Bio-Chemistry from Tennessee Technological University. He originally came to Memphis to pursue an education for the ministry, but felt called into education and using his collegiate background, will be teaching Chemistry to our Cougars this year.

Mr. Parrish believes that reading is fundamental and that it is important people understand the role of economics in education and society. He hopes he is able to make a difference and help his students.

Mr. Parrish lives in the Memphis area with his wife, two Siberian Huskies, and a diabetic cat. When he has free time, he enjoys video games/tabletop games, traveling, and camping.

Welcome to Kirby High, Mr. Parrish! You are…

Today, we would like to introduce you to our new SDC World History teacher, Mr. Glenn Brown.

Mr. Brown is originally from Cleveland, MS. He holds a BA from Delta State University, a MA from Mississippi State University, a MPA from the University of Mississippi, and a MPPA from the University of Michigan, as well as teaching credentials from Freed-Hardeman University.

Before teaching, Mr. Brown served in the Economic Development division of the U.S. Department of Commerce for more than 20 years. Following his retirement from that post, he took some time off before deciding to keep himself busy by going into education. He has taught in Mississippi, for Youth Villages, and for several schools in SCS, including Bolton HS, Grandview Heights MS, and Geeter K-8, teaching a variety of Social Studies disciplines.

His biggest advice with education for students is this:
“Continue to try. Even if you fail, continue to try…never be ashamed to raise your hand, because once that light bulb goes off, you’ll feel better.”

When he’s not working, he enjoys watching classic Westerns on TV, listening to a variety of music, reading historical autobiographies, and visiting with his 3 sons, 3 granddaughters, and 12 siblings.

Welcome to Kirby, Mr. Brown. You are truly…

KHS Families,

We would like to welcome our new 9th Grade Assistant Principal, Mr. Ryan Damek.

Mr. Damek, a native of Tucson, AZ, earned a BA in English from the University of Arizona, as well as a MEd and EdS from Union University, where he is currently completing his EdD.

Mr. Damek has taught with Shelby County Schools since 2013 in a variety of schools and positions. He taught ELA and Social Studies at Manassas HS and Kate Bond MS, and served as a curriculum coach with Wooddale HS and Manassas HS.

When asked about why he chose to come to Kirby, Mr. Damek cited his desire to work under the leadership of our principal Dr. Steevon R. Hunter and believes he was fortunate to obtain this position.

When asked about his educational philosophy, Mr. Damek said “I’ve always wanted to be in something where I know I’m making a difference. Making a connection with students, seeing them grow…has always been enjoyable for me. For me, a lot of education is encouragement.”

When he has free time, Mr. Damek enjoys hiking, camping, spending time outdoors, bike riding, and rooting on his Arizona Wildcats.

Welcome to Kirby HS, Mr. Damek! We look forward to working with you for many years to come! You are…
