*Official School Board Statement: Addressing the Epidemic of Violence in Memphis*

When our students, families, and employees grieve, we grieve alongside them. To stand beside a family in pain and simply offer condolences is heartbreaking because we cannot take the hurt away. Furthermore, it’s unsettling to witness others push personal opinions following incidents like the tragic passing of a Whitehaven High School student-athlete. Connecting an act of gun violence with the District’s decision to delay fall sports and prioritize the health and safety of students and staff is absolutely deplorable.

The large number of children affected by gun violence is an issue that impacts our entire city and county. As a Board and District, we work tirelessly to intervene and support students in need. We also partner with local organizations to combat violence in our neighborhoods. While we cannot control everything that happens in our community, we diligently strive to holistically support every child.

Any instance when the life of a precious child is taken, we take it PERSONALLY. With poverty, crime and violence plaguing our communities, we implore every resident to take what is happening PERSONALLY. Now is the time to come together seeking solutions to eradicate violence in Memphis and across the nation. Rather than casting blame, let us stand alongside our families with the determination and power to actualize change.

For our children,

The Shelby County Board of Education

As a supplement to virtual instruction, SCS is relaunching its weekly video lesson series in multiple subjects for elementary, middle and high school students. SCS teachers worked with the District’s C19TV team to create the video lessons to provide extra enrichment and supplement the live instruction for added support at home.β €

***This new video series does not replace virtual instruction. All students should be online and learning from their teachers every day from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. The instructional videos do not account for a student’s grade or classroom performance.*** They only support the virtual learning curriculum, and in the event that families experience unexpected technical difficulties with the internet or their devices, will also help ensure students have access to teacher-led instruction every day.β €
β €
These instructional videos will air daily from 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. on C19TV (Comcast Cable Channel 19) and will stream on All video lessons will be available to stream on all Amazon Fire TV and Roku devices. The full programming schedule will be shared soon.β €

Although we are starting virtually, we are prepared for a return to in-person education once it is safe to do so. Today, Board Members and District staff toured Brewster Elementary and Central High to see the new safety measures implemented at all schools to keep our students, staff, and educators healthy.

A new daily attendance code has been established by the District and is being shared with our schools. This new attendance code (ANC - Absent for No Connection) is to be used when a student’s parent provides an excuse which indicates the student could not participate in virtual learning that day as a result of a power outage or loss of internet connectivity. As with all absences, the student is eligible for make-up work per SCS Board Policy 6014.

SCS policies and procedures are in alignment with guidance from the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) regarding attendance.

In addition, we are working closely with MLGW to monitor outages and disconnections, and to determine next steps around supporting families who are experiencing a disruption in service.

We have partnered with WMC Action News 5 to make Headsets for Learning happen. Our goal is to ensure every student has a headset to give them more focus during virtual learning but we need your help. One Headset costs $10 dollars. Would you consider supporting "Headsets for Learning" right now with a $10 contribution?
