Summer is often viewed as a break in the academic calendar, but for many graduate students, it can be the most vulnerable time of the year.
In a powerful and personal reflection, Dr. Deborah Tollefsen, Vice Provost & Dean of the University of Memphis Graduate School, shares her own experience navigating graduate school while facing financial uncertainty, housing instability, and the challenge of simply making it to the next semester. Her story raises an important question for higher education:

One of the best parts of being a student at the University of Memphis? Real-world experience that makes an impact.
Dr. Bollerโs marketing students recently developed and pitched a Graduate School brand story to our team, giving them the opportunity to work on a real client project, present their ideas professionally, and gain hands-on experience beyond the classroom.
Even better? Every student in the group is continuing their journey at UofM by enrolling in graduate school! Weโre so proud of the creativity, professionalism, and thoughtful work they brought to the table. They did an awesome job, and we canโt wait to see what they accomplish next.
And shoutout to the iconic Dr. Boller for creating opportunities like this for students. Faculty members like him are what make the UofM experience so meaningful โ connecting classroom learning with real-world experiences that prepare students for whatโs next.

Weโre continuing our series highlighting the moments, mentors and experiences that shape the graduate journey at the University of Memphis, this time with ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ธ, ๐ฎ ๐จ๐ผ๐ณ๐ ๐๐น๐ผ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐น ๐ ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฃ๐๐ฏ๐น๐ถ๐ฐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ต (๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น๐ถ๐๐) ๐ด๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ.
For Andrew, learning online didnโt mean sacrificing quality. Under the instruction of ๐๐ฟ. ๐๐ฏ๐ ๐ ๐ผ๐ต๐ฎ๐บ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ง๐ถ๐๐, his Environmental Health course became a defining academic experience: rigorous, engaging and deeply impactful. It challenged him to grow, pushed him beyond complacency and reaffirmed that he made the right choice in pursuing graduate study at UofM.
This is what ๐จ๐ผ๐ณ๐ ๐๐น๐ผ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐น does at its best: delivering high-quality, flexible education that meets students where they are. With 20+ years of experience in online learning and 100+ degree programs, UofM Global allows students to balance life, career and education while still receiving the same level of excellence and support from dedicated faculty.
In programs like the ๐ ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฃ๐๐ฏ๐น๐ถ๐ฐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ต, students gain real-world experience through fieldwork, community partnerships and research opportunities that prepare them to lead in areas like public health policy, community health and beyond.
At UofM, excellence isnโt limited by location; itโs defined by faculty who are committed to helping students succeed, wherever they are.
Follow along as we continue to highlight how UofM faculty inspire, mentor and transform graduate students.
