The Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis along with our grantee partners connect families in the communities we serve to resources and opportunities that empower both adults and children and bring families towards self-sufficiency and stability. Yolanda Robinson, a former Foote Homes resident, is a mother of five and a grandmother of nine. She was a participant of the first "Getting Ahead" class at WFGM.
Once a teen mother, Robinson says she always put her focus on her kids first. She worked several jobs but was rejected from careers she wanted to pursue because she dropped out of high school. With encouragement from the staff, Robinson enrolled in The Excel Center-Memphis, a free program for Mid-South adults to receive their high school diploma.
“At the age of 45, I graduated with honors. I felt so whole that I did it after all these years. My main focus was my kids and grandkids. Now they look at me with proudness. I wanted my children to be able to see me as an inspiration to them and to see that it's never too late to get where you want to be,” she said.
Robinson is now enrolled Southwest Tennessee Community College, majoring in Criminal Justice.
“I would like to thank the Women's Foundation and everything that they do for me, my family and all the families of 38126 and the surrounding communities. I would like to thank them for being there, being an inspiration to us and just being leaders of women.”
Please make your gift today at wfgm.org. Your gift to the Women’s Foundation gives women like Yolanda the opportunity to pursue their own pathway toward success. Through the power of philanthropy, leadership and collaboration, the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis’ impact is widespread, producing meaningful outcomes that change lives – one family at a time.
It’s official. We have the best volunteers.
Our outreach team recently tabled at the The Excel Center-Memphis’s 2022 Community Career Fair. Our volunteers for this event, Reghan and Lataysha, did an amazing job helping us set up and discussing A Step Ahead’s services and impact.

I want to thank the Excel Center for the opportunity to change my life. A little about me I was a 12th grade drop out in 2003. I really at the time enjoyed the fast life. I then became a mother three years after I dropped out of high school. Life became so hard. I alway had a passion for hair and always wanted to be a hairstylist. I started to work jobs that wasn’t supporting my son or myself. I had to come up with a plan to do better for my son and I. Guess what four years later baby #2. Still no high school diploma to get to my dream or goals. I got up one day and said I got to go back to school to better my boys and my life. I enrolled at the Excel Center and guess what I still wasn’t ready because I need money to support us. I only had my 12th grade year to complete. I went to the Excel Center four times before I got it right. With the help of the staff and Ms.Cynthia. To wrap this up I graduated with the Covid class of 2021 I must say that was the best feeling I’ve ever had in my life at that time. I decided since I was determined to get my high school diploma I could do the same to get my Hair License. In ten months not even a whole year I have completed Natural Hair school and now I’m a License Natural Hairstylist and a Certified Braider. All thanks to the man above🙌🏽 I’m now doing my career dream. Life has became so much easier. I hope this will help somebody. Never give up on your dreams.
