Mariam Hibah K. -

Clarence Day Scholar at Rhodes College

Although this semester has been the most challenging yet, it wasn’t without its blessings. I am so grateful to have received a few awards this semester related to my academic studies and my student government work.

Last week, I was notified that I was awarded the Bobby Doughtie Memorial award for the 2nd/3rd year student who has completed the most distinguished course work in international studies. I can’t thank the I.S. department enough for this recognition and for being a consistent source of inspiration and empowerment for me.

I would also like to thank my peers at the Rhodes student senate for selecting me for the Jacob Abraham Award that recognizes one member of RSG “who has led by example through hard work and dedication and who has inspired and motivated RSG through an extraordinary commitment to excellence and innovation.” Serving as the chair of the Diversity and Inclusion committee for the past two years and working to empower underrepresented students has truly been a highlight of my college career.

Most importantly, I want to thank God for placing me at an institution that has allowed me to do discover my passion for U.S. and Middle East politics and to do the work I love most through RSG.
ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ‎ ~ Alhamdulilah, all praise is to the most high.

AsSalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu,

Earlier this month, we created a challenge for students between 3rd-12th grade to see which grade would be able to earn the most money to distribute zakat eligible food boxes to the needy in Memphis Thank you so much to the people who have already donated and a special thanks go out to 7th and 9th grades for raising over $200. With the donations, we have already begun to distribute the boxes. However, we still need your donations and so we continue to ask everyone to donate until the end of the month for our community. Acts of charity will be accepted by Allah (SWT) and the reward will be multiplied during this blessed month of Ramadan. Any amount is appreciated, and please make sure to add your child’s name/grade
so we are able to correctly credit them.

I AM PVS, Fundraiser 2021

[04/21/21]   Message from Principal Dr. Malley:

Al-Hamdulillah, this year’s PVS graduating class has continued the tradition of getting accepted into some of the nation’s top universities. Since our first graduating class in 2016, PVS students have annually been accepted into some of the most prestigious local and national Universities.

Some of the out-of-state universities into which this year’s graduates have been accepted include:

The University of Southern California
Washington University in St. Louis (2 students)
New York University (2 students)
Emory University (2 students)
Kenyon College
Boston University
Macalester College
Reed College
Hofstra University

Al-Hamdulillah, 100% of our students got accepted into all of the in-state universities to which they applied. This includes:

Rhodes College (5 students)
The University of Tennessee at Knoxville
Christian Brothers University
The University of Memphis

Some of these universities are among the most prestigious in the country and have difficult entrance requirements. The fact that our students were able to get accepted into them is a testament to their hard work, the commitment and dedication of our teaching staff, and the professional expertise of our college admissions program. In addition to being accepted, many of our students were admitted into University Honors Programs and they received millions of dollars in scholarships. Of the students who got admitted into Rhodes, one received the highly competitive Cambridge Scholarship, the highest academic merit scholarship the university provides, and another received the equally prestigious Clarence Day Service Leadership Scholarship.

Our students were able to submit strong college applications that impressed college admissions committees with their extracurricular and leadership activities, the rigor of their course loads, their letters of recommendation, their application essays, and their successes in a number of competitions.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our graduating seniors and to thank their teachers and counselor for all of their hard work.

Ultimately, all Praise is due to Allah for this great success. We thank Him for enabling PVS to facilitate the future success of our students in both this life and the Hereafter.

PVS Daily Quiz Question, Challenge & Reflections:

The Question for Day 29 is:
1. What is the story that is mentioned in the beginning of the 29th Juz about the two men with gardens?
2. In Surah Al-Haqqah, it mentions the people who will receive their records in their right hand and the people who will receive it in their left hand. What will the people who received their book in the right hand say? What will the people who receive their book in the left hand say? Why will they say this?
3. What is the story of Nuh that is mentioned in the 29th Juz?

RAMADAN DAILY CHALLENGE:
We have reached the end of Ramadan. It is possible that today or tomorrow is the last day of this holy and blessed month.

Do not see the end of Ramadan as an ending, but rather, look at it as the beginning. Allah has given us Ramadan as a blessing and as a means for us to draw nearer to Him, His religion, His book, and His prophet. We have developed good habits, did extra good deeds, and extra acts of worship throughout this month. Just because Ramadan is ending, it does not mean that we have to stop doing all the good that we did during the month. During Ramadan we are supposed to develop these good habits so that we can continue to do them throughout the year.

For today's challenge, we challenge you to make a plan that will layout the good deeds you will do throughout the year. If you prayed extra prayers and sunnah prayers, continue to pray extra prayers and sunnah prayers. If you donated more, continue to donate. If you recited and memorized more Quran, continue to recite and memorize Quran. If you did more dhikr, continue to do dhikr. You fasted this entire month, continue to do sunnah fasts throughout the year. If you did any form of good deeds or acts of worship, continue to do them even after Ramadan ends. A sign of your Ramadan being accepted is that you continue to do the good habits you developed even after Ramadan has ended. Even if you feel as if you wasted this entire Ramadan, know that you can receive Allah's mercy anytime of the year and you can become better today. Let the end of this Ramadan mark the beginning of you following the path to becoming a better person. May Allah accept our entire Ramadan, allow us to continue to do good, and keep us steadfast on the straight path. Ameen.

We have posted this before, but we would like to remind you to continue to say this dua throughout the last nights of Ramadan inshaAllah:

ANSWERS TO DAY 28 QUESTIONS:
1. How many names of Allah are mentioned in Surah Al-Hashr? Name three names of Allah and give their meanings. If you do not include the name "Allah" there are about 20 names of Allah that are mentioned (but it is possible that I miscounted).
2. There is a group of people who Allah says are the enemies and He will never forgive. Who are these people? Quote your evidence. In Ayat 1 to 6 in Surah Munafiqun, Allah describes the hypocrites as enemies and people He will not forgive.
3. What does Allah mean when He compares the people who were given the Torah to a donkey that carries volumes of books on its back? They are not benefiting from the knowledge. A donkey carrying books on his back is useless to him because he is not actually gaining or benefiting from the knowledge.
