✨Student Spotlight✨
This week we asked Abraham what he liked most about CLC:
“What I like about CLC, actually love, is the opportunity about not only to learn English but also to create connections with native speaker in order to get into a unique and amazing experience to learn the language. Also… which is the best to be honest, they implement various playful strategies to make the learning process easier. You’re are learning and having fun, that is wonderful!!!
When asked how English class has positively influenced his confidence when using English, he said:
It’s like life changing!! I feel more confident speaking which make be able to have more interaction with people and feel integrate. I’m improving as the classes go by and I notice how stared to do and face things in my daily life that I was feel uncomfortable to do basically for doubting about my English skills.. honestly, attend to English class was the best decision that I took in my journey to learn English!
Abraham has taken every opportunity to improve his English and build community. He attends Cafe English every week, attends class and does work outside of class. He has made friendships with our staff, teachers, classmates and other native speakers! He is our ideal student and we are so thankful to have him as a part of our community🤍
Come learn English with us and experience what Abraham is talking about! 🙌🏼

"Bring up" means to raise for discussion or consideration. For example, in a conversation, someone could say, "I didn’t think he would bring up the subject."
Another way of using the phrase is to describe how a parent cares for a child until the child becomes an adult. "She brought up her children to have an appreciation for learning."

"Bring back," means to make something or somebody return to a place, state, situation, or conversation topic. In the picture, we see someone watching a movie. An example sentence using our phrase could be, "Watching this movie brings back lots of memories for me."
"Bring back," also means to bring something one has taken from a place they come from. "This is the hat he brought back from New York."

Dear friends,
As some of you may know, one of our students here at the CLC, Ney Cruz, tragically passed away this past Sunday. He was an eager and engaged student who always sought to affirm and encourage his teacher and classmates. He brought energy to every class, worked hard, and was always kind.
As we continue to grieve, we ask that you join us in prayer for Ney and his family, his classmates and friends, and his teachers. Let us pray for peace and comfort, amen.

Another Friday, another phrasal verb lesson! This week we have "put up."
"Put up" can mean display or attach something so it can be seen. We see that in this photo of a woman "putting up" a lost dog poster.
Another way of using this phrase is to add the word "with," which changes the meaning to being willing or not to accept something unpleasant or undesirable.
The last common example is to build or place something somewhere. For example, "They put up a new fence after the previous one fell apart."

Happy Tuesday! Let's see what tips Ashton has to share with us...
BE CONFIDENT!!!
Accuracy: speak with few mistakes but slowly & with many pauses (doesn’t sound very natural)
Fluency: speak quickly, easily, and naturally but with more mistakes
If your goal is accuracy (to sound perfect whenever you speak in English), you will often be too nervous to speak and too focused on having correct grammar that you are afraid to speak.
Make your goal fluency - just get it out - most people will understand you!

We are mid-way through our Summer class cycle! Time to check in on Teacher Ashton’s class. Last week her class practiced reviewing days, months, numbers, verbs and more through playing Jeopardy!

Today's is "take up."
"Take up" can be used in many different contexts, but the primary three are as follows...
"Take up" can mean to use a particular amount of space, time or effort. It can also mean to discuss or deal with an issue, idea, or matter. Another standard definition is to start doing a particular job or activity, especially for fun.
An example sentence for the first definition shown in today's photo is, "The rewriting of the document took up a whole afternoon."

Welcome to the CLC Emery!
Emery is one of our recent ConnecTEFL student graduates and is now teaching with us at the CLC.
She shared with us some of her thoughts about why she chose to get involved at the CLC and how she has enjoyed teaching so far.
---
"I saw there were many places to teach English, but I wanted to be trained. I was excited to hear about TEFL as an option to learn about how to teach ESL because I was a teacher but never worked in ESL or with adults. It was fun to learn about ESL, language acquisition, navigating culture, and more with other people interested in the same thing! Now I love it and want to continue spending my time here when I can."
---
Check out her full reflection in the next pic!

Another Friday, another phrasal verb lesson!
This week we have "turn around." To "turn around" means to move so as to face in the opposite direction or to make something become better or more successful than it previously was, like the economy or a business.
To share an example sentence for the photo, we would use the first definition and say, "She turned around when he tapped her on the shoulder."

It's ! This week's phrase is "Hold up."
"Hold up" describes raising something in a high position so it can be seen or reached. It also means something is still in good condition after a long period. The last common use of the phrase is to delay or prevent the progression of something or somebody.
As we see in the photo, cars are stuck in traffic. Using the phrase, we would say, "We were held up by heavy traffic."
