PVS High School Student Interviewed on Local News

A PVS student recently appeared on WREG Channel 3’s Live at 9. The PVS student was invited to speak about her involvement in a local effort to end an MOU agreement between the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and Shelby County Schools (The interview can be seen here: https://www.wreg.com/on-air/live-at-9/coalition-wants-to-end-agreement-between-scs-shelby-county-sheriffs-office/) The PVS student has been recognized by other organizations including the Women of Color Conference for her work on the local campaign. The student has worked alongside local school board members, county commissioners, and local activists for more than a year to advance the effort. She was also invited to speak on a recent panel about the presence of law enforcement and access to mental health resources in local public schools. Although this semester has been the most challenging yet, it wasn’t without its blessings. I am so grateful to have received a few awards this semester related to my academic studies and my student government work.

Last week, I was notified that I was awarded the Bobby Doughtie Memorial award for the 2nd/3rd year student who has completed the most distinguished course work in international studies. I can’t thank the I.S. department enough for this recognition and for being a consistent source of inspiration and empowerment for me.

I would also like to thank my peers at the Rhodes student senate for selecting me for the Jacob Abraham Award that recognizes one member of RSG “who has led by example through hard work and dedication and who has inspired and motivated RSG through an extraordinary commitment to excellence and innovation.” Serving as the chair of the Diversity and Inclusion committee for the past two years and working to empower underrepresented students has truly been a highlight of my college career.

Most importantly, I want to thank God for placing me at an institution that has allowed me to do discover my passion for U.S. and Middle East politics and to do the work I love most through RSG.
ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ‎ ~ Alhamdulilah, all praise is to the most high.
