Rhodes College Alumni

National Hispanic Heritage Month traditionally honors the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans as we celebrate heritage rooted in all Latin American countries. Rhodes College Office of Alumni Relations will celebrate the contributions and initiatives of our Latinx faculty, staff, students, and alumni September 15 – October 15.

Iris Mercado ‘15
Program Coordinator, The Lynne & Henry Turley Memphis Center

An Urban Studies major and Anthropology/Sociology minor from Memphis, Iris was very active on campus as a student leader in Rhodes Rebuilds, Culture of Consent and the RUKA international community, as well as a member of the Black Student Association. As a senior, Iris was awarded the Sargent Shriver Youth Warriors Against Poverty Leadership Award, named for Sargent Shriver, architect of the War on Poverty and visionary leader of Head Start, Peace Corps, and Job Corps. Locally, the Memphis Flyer featured her as a member of their 2015 ‘20 Under 30,’ recognizing her as one of “twenty young Memphians who are shaping the city’s future.”

Iris left Rhodes with a passion to support students and her communities and has been able to do so as a grassroots organizer, health educator, and teacher. Today, as an advocate for reproductive justice and immigrant & refugee rights, Iris works with Memphis community partners addressing the racial and economic disparities amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
Iris' favorite part of working with students at Rhodes is seeing their commitment to equity and justice, and she looks forward to the new Rhodes chapter of Define American, a culture change organization that uses media and the power of storytelling to transcend politics and shift the conversation about immigrants, identity, and citizenship in a changing America.

Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Iris’ family moved to the US and quickly fell in love with Memphis. Her family's commitment to justice in the Midsouth is what led Iris to choose Rhodes. Her sister, Aylen Mercado '19, was also a student leader, 2019 Hall of Fame inductee, and Urban Studies and Latin American/Latinx Studies double major.

Mariposas Collective

Mariposas Collective is a grassroots group of folks united by solidarity and a desire for justice which focuses on welcoming families and fellow humans that recently migrated to the United States and the Memphis area. This is a 100% volunteer collective effort and there are several areas in which we always need hands and hearts:

- Assisting Asylum Seekers and other fellow humans at the bus station: we provide assistance in the form of food, clothing shoes, toiletries, and other immediate needs. We work to assist their travel & their families, making it a little more comfortable after all they've gone through in their asylum journey and immigration detention. Orientation is every Saturday from 2-3 pm. Please, message (901) 827-0523 for information and sign up.

- Supporting organizations at the border: we channel some support to organizations closer to the border, and groups that are crossing daily, bringing supplies and basic services to the refugee camps now spread through the north of México or doing work with migrants on the southern border. If you want to join the Mariposas Collective´s Border Support Group, we meet every other Tuesday and you can sign up by clicking on the following link:
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040d4baead2da5f85-mariposas
- Supporting local Migrant Families: with basic food and clothing needs, in connection with local organizations and churches in the Memphis area. If you want to get involved with this work, send us a message through our page https://www.facebook.com/MariposasCollective.

- Supporting local organizations: in coordination with local non-profit legal organizations we are working to help asylum seekers and migrant families with paperwork preparation and other needs related to the migration process. If you want to get involved with this work, send us a message through our email: [email protected].

- Donating: our needs change often so it is best to send us a message for an updated list. Currently we are accepting donations of rice, beans, canned fruit and food for local families. If you would like to do a monetary donation, please, message us and we will gladly provide you with all the information about it (First Congregational Church is our fiscal sponsor and helps us kindly with this).

Thank you for your interest and support.

General information
