Calling all dinosaur hunters! I never thought I would ever see such a sight...
Driving through Thermopolis, Wyoming (circa July 2010), in the center of town, is a huge metal T-Rex dinosaur. This statue celebrates the Wyoming Dinosaur Center located just on the outskirts of town.
This is one of the few dinosaur museums in the world to have excavation sites within driving distance. The museum displays the Thermopolis Specimen of Archaeopteryx, which is the only real specimen of this genus on display outside of Europe.
And...
On this day in history, Aug 12 1990, fossil hunter Susan Hendrickson, discovered 3 huge bones sticking out of a cliff in the vicinity of Faith, South Dakota. Those 3 measly bones turned out to be part of the largest-ever T-Rex skeleton ever discovered. And get this... the bones dated back 65 million years ago.
The skeleton, nicknamed Sue, is over 90% complete and very well-preserved. Sue is now a permanent resident of the Chicago Museum of Natural History.
