Seniors Program celebrated 50 years of Foster Grandparent volunteers in Memphis this week! The Shelby County program began in 1972 at Arlington Developmental Center with 20 foster grandparent volunteers and has been housed at Porter-Leath for over 35 years.
Today, 106 seniors spend an average of 25 hours each week providing additional support to children in the areas of literacy and reading at over 30 locations in Shelby and Fayette counties. The foster grandparents, who live on limited resources, receive a tax-free stipend to allow them to volunteer at no cost to themselves.
